Tips for Making Your Recycled Craft Project

  • If the smell of the corks bothers you, spritz them with some white vinegar and leave them to sit in the sun for about 30 minutes. This should take care of any odors and you wi be ready for your ideas for cork crafts.
  • If you need to cut the corks, use a heavy-duty crafting knife. Be careful using this knife as they tend to be quite sharp. This comes in handy if making wine cork coasters too.
  • When gluing the corks, use a glue stick that is labeled as a strong bond. Because the surface of the corks is a tad slick, you need strong glue to bond them together.

Materials

  • 41-Recycled Wine Corks
  • Light Green, Medium Green, and Dark Green Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Grosgrain Ribbon

Tools

  • Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrushes

Instructions

  1. Lay out 12 corks as follows: One cork, two corks, three corks, four corks, then two corks.
  2. Using a glue gun, glue the corks together in rows. Next, stack and glue the corks in a pyramid shape. Attach the final two corks in between the first and second corks on the right and left sides, creating a “heart” shape. Repeat for two more.
  3.  Using the glue gun, attach the three cork hearts together at the base of each “heart”. For the last 5 corks, make a curved row for the stem, starting at the base of the shamrock, and secure it with a glue gun and glue sticks.
  4. Using a paintbrush, paint some of the ends of the corks with dark green acrylic craft paint, then using a new paintbrush, paint some of the ends with the medium paint, and with the final paintbrush, color the remaining corks with the light-colored paint. Allow to dry completely. You may need another coat of paint. Or, you can skip this step and allow the corks to be natural.
  5. Tie a grosgrain ribbon into a bow, and attach it to the center of the cork shamrock with a glue gun and glue sticks.
