Pom Pom Bunny Free Pattern

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I know it’s February, but I’m in full Easter crafting mode. Items for kids are doing well for me – no surprise there – so I decided to add something else to the mix: a cute pompom bunny!

Below, I will share a few ways to create this bunny: with some scissors, with a cutting machine (like a Cricut), or with a laser. All of them use the same template.

Materials Needed for This Easter Craft Idea

Below are the materials I used, along with hot glue and scissors. You can choose either wood (laser) or felt for the free pattern – both will work just fine as I’ve shown.

Note: if creating this cute bunny by hand, you’ll also need a printer (or trace on a computer screen).

Pom-Pom Bunny Video Tutorials

I figured that you would be making either / or and not both, so I separated the process out into two tutorials.

Hand Cut Pompom Bunny Craft

If you are manually cutting or using a Cricut, watch this easy felt pom pom bunny craft video tutorial. Cricut users: set up and process your cuts and then join us for the assembly in this video.

Laser Cut Pom Pom Bunny DIY

If you’re using a laser (I’m using the xTool M1 Ultra) to cut the free template, watch this laser cut pom pom bunny video tutorial. If you know the set up and your settings already, skip to minute 8 in the video.

How to Make This Pompom Easter Bunny (Instructions)

Below are the step by step instructions for this holiday craft. If you would like a printable version, scroll to the bottom of this post and select print.

Prepare Using Scissors

Print off the PNG version of the file and cut out each pattern piece. Trace each onto felt and skep to the assembly portion. Note: choose which mouth and nose combination and only use one for each bunny.

Prepare Cut File (Cricut)

Upload the SVG and size all using the transform controls. Ungroup the items and choose which colors of felt to load onto the mats (use a brayer tool). Note: choose which nose and mouth combination will be used and remove the other.

Select the corresponding felt setting and do a test cut (felt is finicky). Process the cuts and remove the pieces from the mats. Skip to the assembly instructions.

Prepare Cut File (Laser)

Import the SVG to the software, size using the transform controls, and ungroup. Set all red items to cut, blue to engrave, and purple to score. Note: choose which nose and mouth combination will be cut and turn off/remove the other.

Insert the laser module, select the “Basswood Plywood” setting from the EasySet Materials menu or input your settings. Use auto-measure for the distance, mark the area, and process.

Once processed, wipe down the edges before removing masking. Paint and/or seal, if desired, and move to assembly.

Assemble the Pompom Bunny

  1. If using felt, glue together doubled pieces, if using. Add wire between to stiffen up thinner felt and cut to the bottom of the felt (no need to stick it into the pompom).
  2. Use hot glue to affix the pom-pom to the feet piece. Let it dry.
  3. Secure the inner ear pieces to the outer ear pieces with glue. Glue on the top nose piece.
  4. Part the fur horizontally along the top center and glue the ear base directly to the pom pom.
  5. Part the fur at the center of the pompom, equidistance from the feet and ears. Hot glue on the nose and teeth or nose and whiskers base. Display your hand crafted pompom bunny decoration.

Prepare Using Scissors

  1. Print off the PNG version of the file (be sure to measure the pompom you're using/making and size it in any word processing program or online editor). Cut out each pattern piece.
  2. Trace each pattern piece onto felt. Note: you can trace two of everything for a thicker version when using thin or non-stiffened felt.
  3. Skip down to the assembly portion once all pieces have been cut.

Prepare Cut File Cricut

  1. If using Cricut, upload the SVG and size all using the transform controls. Ungroup the items.
  2. Choose which felt colors will be used and load them on the mats. Use a brayer tool to secure them well and insert the rotary blade (if using). If not, it can be done with a standard blade.
  3. Choose which nose and mouth combination will be cut. Make sure to get the nose piece by itself for either.
  4. Select the corresponding felt setting and do a test cut (felt is finicky).
  5. Process the cuts and remove the pieces from the mats. Skip to the assembly instructions.

Prepare Cut File (Laser)

  1. Import the SVG to the software, size using the transform controls, and ungroup.
  2. Set all red items to cut, blue to engrave, and purple to score. Choose which nose and mouth combination will be cut. Make sure to get the nose piece by itself for either. Turn off the other nose combination by selecting no output or deleting it from the canvas.
  3. Insert the laser module and, if using, apply masking to the front and back of the basswood before loading onto the bed or honeycomb. Select the "Basswood Plywood" setting from the EasySet Materials menu or input your settings. NOTE: you should always run a test on material (see note below).
  4. Position the laser crosshairs over the material, set the distance, and the marking area. Frame and/or send it to process. Mine took about 4.5 minutes for each pass.
  5. Once processed, wipe down the edges before removing masking.
  6. Paint and/or seal, if desired.

Notes

Project Notes:

  1. If making a pompom yourself (from faux fur or yarn), make it before you cut the pieces to ensure sizing is accurate. I used a 6x6 inch piece of Sherpa fleece for my handmade pompom.
  2. My most recent set of basswood plywood has a bit more glue in it and, therefore, I find I'm having to run two passes to get through it. You might not need two passes on your laser.
  3. If using a thinner felt for hand cutting or for use in a cutting machine like a Cricut or Silhouette, you can cut multiples and glue them together with craft glue.

M1 Ultra 10 watt Settings:

  1. Cut: 100/5/2 (masked wood)
  2. Score: 70/50/2
  3. Engrave: 50/100/1 (masked wood; this WILL vary if not masked)
