Tips For Making A Bowtruckle Bookmark
- If crafting with younger kids, trace the template pattern onto the felt and cut one layer of felt at a time.
- Older kids and adults can use small detail scissors to cut out intricate areas like the feet, hands, and stems on the ears.
- Low temperature glue sticks for the hot glue gun work best with felt. Otherwise, you can burn a hole in the felt (or burn your fingers).
- If you press too hard on the glued felt, the glue will bleed through and permanently leave a wet-looking spot. Instead of pressing, lightly join the two together and let the glue ste.
- Use scraps of neon green felt to practice drawing with dimensional paints. This is especially helpful for the smaller hands in the group.

Download and print the Bowtruckle Pattern Template. Cut around the pattern with scissors.
Pin the Bowtruckle Felt Bookmark pattern onto two layers of neon green craft felt with straight pins. If it’s too bulky, use a single sheet of felt at a time.
Using scissors, carefully cut out the Bowtruckle pattern from the neon green craft felt.
Outline the Bowtruckle with green floral wire, bending it into shape along the pattern. Using the hot glue gun, attach the wire to the felt. Using silicone fingertip protectors, gently tap the wire into the glue.
Going slowly and working in small sections, use a hot glue gun and attach the top layer of felt to the bottom.
Draw the brown dimensional fabric paint onto the Bowtruckle’s fingers and toes. Add brown painted details to the leaves, the top of his head, and on the eyes.
Outline the Bowtruckle’s body with green dimensional fabric paint. Add green details to the top leaves and draw a green mouth. Using white paint, add a small highlight to each eye. Set aside to allow the paint to dry completely.
Notes for Making a Felt Bowtruckle Bookmark
- We recommend using a 14 or 16-gauge floral wire. This will be easier to work with but will still make for a sturdy bookmark.
- If you prefer, use a fine-point set of markers for outlining the body of the Bowtruckle, and coloring the feet, hands, eyes, and leaves.
- You can use white or tacky glue for this project. Just allow additional time for drying.
