Easy Fall Gnome with a Sunflower Hat

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I like to challenge myself when readers ask for help using up their craft stashes. Over on my YouTube channel, I received a request for a gnome sewing pattern that had the following characteristics:

  • easy for a beginner to sew,
  • can be sized up or down,
  • makes an adorable gnome,
  • many can be made quickly.

Challenge accepted and answered, friend. This easy gnome body style will allow for a TON of designs, including allowing you to go beyond the traditional gnome hat. Today, I’m sharing how I used a set of artificial flowers to create elegant fall gnomes with a free pattern you can make in minutes.

Tips for Making This Easy Gnome Sewing Pattern

  • If you do not want to sew this project, you can still make it. I strongly recommend using a fabric hot glue, fusible tape at 1/4 inch (love this stuff), or Liquid Stitch™ Fabric Mender.
  • This pattern can be sized up or down, but take care to adjust the box pleat bottom’s distance from the edges. The taller the gnome body, the wider the base should be to keep it stable.
  • For the gnome beard, I used a Norwegian Husky faux fur I purchased on Amazon. They might be out of it, but this is the brand and size I used so look through their offerings for something you like.
  • If you use fleece or felt, you can use the easy needle felting technique to add a gorgeous wool locks beard as shown in this free Christmas gnome pattern tutorial.
  • A few ideas for gnome noses are wood balls (I used 1 inch), noses made from polymer or air dry clay, nylon fabric stuffed with Poly-Fil, and even pompoms.

Materials

  • Cotton Fabric
  • Faux Fur
  • Wood Ball or Other Nose
  • Poly Pellets
  • Poly-Fill
  • Sunflower and Leaves / Flower 4-7 inch Faux Floral Stem

Tools

  • Sewing Machine
  • Scissors / Shears
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Embroidery Needle

Instructions

  1. Cut two pieces of cotton fabric at 5.5 inches x 7.5 inches. Place them right sides together, pin, and sew along three edges (short edge open) with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving the top 1.25-1.5 inches UNSEWN. This essentially creates a pouch. Note: start and reverse stitching to lock in the seams. Crafter showing sewn fabric into a pouch for the base of a gnome body.
  2. Place long edge seams on top of each other and flatten the sewn bottom, lining up the points. Measure 1 inch from each point and sew, locking in the stitches. Crafter using a ruler to measure 1 inch from each pointed edge for a box pleat bottom.
  3. Turn the bag right sides out for a gnome body base and fill the body with 1 cup of Poly Pellets. Stuff with small, torn pieces of Poly-Fill to the top of the sewn edges (there will be loose fabric at the top). Crafter filling a gnome body with weight and stuffing.
  4. Use an embroidery thread and needle to make a running stitch to close up the top of the body. Tie securely, leaving a small hole open in the center and cut the floral stem to fit (do not secure). Crafter using embroidery thread and a needle to sew a gathering stitch on a gnome body.
  5. Measure a faux fur beard and cut into a dropped v-shape. Please see video for more detail. Lift the fur at the top of the beard piece 1/4 inch from the top center and glue on a wood ball for a gnome nose. Crafter adding a wood ball gnome nose to a gnome beard of faux fur.
  6. Glue the beard to the top of the body, ensuring the top edge is covered by the flower. I like to keep the flower in place, position the beard, and secure one side down before removing the flower to glue the rest of the beard. Crafter using a glue gun to attach a piece of faux fur as the gnome beard.
  7. Glue leaves of the flower to the body, run the stem of the flower into the hole, and secure with glue. Display your adorable sunflower gnome for fall! Crafter attaching leaves and an artificial flower for a gnome hat.

Notes

This easy gnome body is a popular choice if creating a lot of gnomes at once. Each body takes less than 5 minutes to cut and sew, making it a great style to make for craft fairs, charity fund raisers, and inexpensive gifts.

Opaque, pliable fabrics work best for this style of body. Thick cotton (not quilting cotton), fleece, felt, and plush or luxe fabrics are best.

If you do not want to sew this project, use a strong fusible tape at 1/4 inch wide or a fabric stitch glue.
