Tips to Make Nordic GNomes from Wood

  • If you want to cut your own wood, that’s great! I didn’t do that, though. I did a little shortcut and bought my wood triangle blocks pre-cut. Best idea ever, because I had to do almost no prep.
  • When you’re making your hats, don’t forget to leave yourself a hem allowance, if you decide not to use felt or fleece, or some other fabric that doesn’t fray. I obviously used felt, so I didn’t leave myself a seam allowance, there just wasn’t a need. But that extra hemming step is necessary if you use a fabric with fray-potential.
  • Let’s talk gnome noses. There’s a fine line between too large and not big enough. If you watch my video tutorial here, you can see that I tried a larger nose. It did not cut it. So I went with a smaller sized wood bead. What I’m trying to say, though, is to try different sizes and styles to find the nose that’s right for you! You can use wood beads, polymer clay balls, stockings stuffed with polyfill, or even ping pong balls. Almost anything will work that’s nice and round.
  • Finally, my favorite part, the beard. If you’re familiar with any of my other gnome tutorials (there are so many, seriously) you know that my favorite tomte beard material is Mongolian fur. It’s long, rich and oh so soft. I recommend the fur here. But, if you would rather buy a small amount, I recommend checking out this Etsy seller (watch the sizes; the pricing is better on Amazon).

Materials

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Razor Blade
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Sanding Block
  • Paper Towel
  • Embroidery Thread Needle

Instructions

  1. Give your wood blocks a good rub-down with the sanding block, then wipe with a paper towel to remove any dust. If you want to paint or stain your wood block triangles, this is the time to do it, just make sure it is completely dry before you move on.
  2. Working with one gnome at a time, cut your gnome beards by cutting out a wide "u" shape about 3 inches shorter than the wood block, but the same width as the wood triangle from the faux fur using the razor blade, cutting the fabric backing of the fur only, not the fur itself.
  3. Glue the beard in place on the front of the wood block. If you want to make a mustache, cut two small squares of faux fur, again cutting just the fabric backing of the fur only, into a 1x1 inch square. Hot glue this on either side of the beard at the top.
  4. Turn your wood bead so that the hole will be hidden and hot glue it in place about 1/2 inch from the top of the beard.
  5. To size your hat, fold the felt fabric over the top of the gnome and wrap it semi-snugly around the wood top, adding about 1/2 inch in hem allowance. Remove the felt from the gnome's head and cut the felt and round off the side over the face.
  6. Fold the hat over to form the desired hat cone shape and hot glue it in place.
  7. Thread your embroidery needle and add "x" shapes of stitches around the edge or in a shape on the hat.
  8. Fit the hat over the gnome's head and tuck it over the nose, adding a dot of hot glue to create a little wrinkle. Secure the hat in the back or on the sides, as desired.
  9. Repeat for the second gnome then enjoy! photo collage of how to make a nordic wood gnome
