Why This Faux Tin Pumpkin Makes a Great Craft
It is super easy to make. Because the bulk of work on this craft is painting, the most difficult part is waiting for the paint to dry before you move on to your next step.
The kids can easily help. Again, because paint is the main material for this project, the kids can help make practically all of the Dollar Store craft. When working with younger kiddos, we suggest not using spray paint. You can easily use acrylic with them and it will turn out just great!
The price is right! Depending on what paint and ribbons you have in your craft room, you can make this craft for a little over $2. That is a tremendous saving from an equally attractive store-bought piece of home decor.
One word; durability. If you seal this project as recommended in the tips below, this is a piece of fall decor you can use for the whole season, year after year. This one will last for a very long time.

- If you want your paint to adhere better and last longer, you can use a primer before you begin the painting portion of your craft.

Cut out the pumpkin shape from the tile with your scissors.
Remove the adhesive backing on the faux tin and throw it away. Attach the plastic faux tin tile to the wooden pumpkin sign with liquid craft glue.
In a well-ventilated area, or outside, cover the faux tin tile pumpkin with white spray paint. Set aside to dry.
Repeat the above step with burnt orange spray paint. Set aside to dry.
Paint a layer of light ivory acrylic craft paint over the pumpkin.
Wipe off the excess light ivory acrylic paint with a damp paper towel or baby wipe.
Paint a layer of dark brown acrylic craft paint over the pumpkin.
Wipe off the excess dark brown acrylic paint with a damp paper towel or baby wipe.
Measure and cut 10” lengths of assorted ribbons, burlap, and natural jute twine with scissors. Stack in a bundle, and tie with twine. Add silk fall leaves, a small tree branch, and an acorn from the yard and glue them together, and then onto the ribbon stack.
Secure the bundle to the top front of the pumpkin with a glue gun. Now you are ready to show off your charming faux tin pumpkin.
Notes for Making a Faux Tin Pumpkin Craft
- If desired, add a length of jute twine, approximately 12″ long, to the back of the faux tin pumpkin for hanging.
- If using spray paint, you must be in a well-ventilated space. If you can paint outdoors, that is the best place to do it.
- When you are wiping the tin in Steps 7 and 9, do not use a Kleenex. It tears easily and small pieces of it can get stuck in the grooves of the tile.
- If you prefer, you can use real fall leaves from your yard in this project. To preserve them, we suggest placing a leaf between two pieces of wax paper and then using a warm iron to transfer the wax onto the leave. Be sure to iron on both sides.
