Why This Faux Tin Pumpkin Makes a Great Craft

It is super easy to make. Because the bulk of work on this craft is painting, the most difficult part is waiting for the paint to dry before you move on to your next step.

The kids can easily help. Again, because paint is the main material for this project, the kids can help make practically all of the Dollar Store craft. When working with younger kiddos, we suggest not using spray paint. You can easily use acrylic with them and it will turn out just great!

The price is right! Depending on what paint and ribbons you have in your craft room, you can make this craft for a little over $2. That is a tremendous saving from an equally attractive store-bought piece of home decor.

One word; durability. If you seal this project as recommended in the tips below, this is a piece of fall decor you can use for the whole season, year after year. This one will last for a very long time.

Tips for Making a Faux Tin Pumpkin Perfect for Fall

  • If you don’t have or prefer not to use spray paint on this Dollar Tree tin craft, you can use acrylic paint for this craft. Just allow appropriate drying times for this material.
  • If you want your paint to adhere better and last longer, you can use a primer before you begin the painting portion of your craft.
  • If you plan to hang this faux tin pumpkin outdoors, we suggest using a sealant. Mod Podge makes a good one or you can check with your local home improvement store.

Notes for Making a Faux Tin Pumpkin Craft

  • If desired, add a length of jute twine, approximately 12″ long, to the back of the faux tin pumpkin for hanging.
  • If using spray paint, you must be in a well-ventilated space. If you can paint outdoors, that is the best place to do it.
  • When you are wiping the tin in Steps 7 and 9, do not use a Kleenex. It tears easily and small pieces of it can get stuck in the grooves of the tile.
  • If you prefer, you can use real fall leaves from your yard in this project. To preserve them, we suggest placing a leaf between two pieces of wax paper and then using a warm iron to transfer the wax onto the leave. Be sure to iron on both sides.
