Tips for Making This Dollar Tree 4th of July Craft

  • Terra Cotta or clay pots are porous so apply the first coat of paint and let it dry before moving on. If setting this up for younger children, paint the pots while beforehand.
  • For straight red lines, use painter’s or washi tape. Space strips of tape evenly around the treat jar and paint the red stripes (remove the tape when wet).
  • For very little ones, offer red tape instead of paint.
  • If you use white school or tacky glue to glue the stars on, allow additional drying time before moving on to the next step.
  • If you plan to display these pots outdoors, seal them with ModPodge or a spray sealant.

Notes for Making 4th of July Treat Jars

  • If you would rather use plastic flower pots rather than clay, those will work for this craft. Just be sure to use a primer or white chalk paint before painting stripes.
  • Any wrapped candy will work for this craft. If it is super hot where you live on the 4th of July, choose a hard candy rather than chocolate.
  • If your Dollar Tree doesn’t have any shredded paper (mine runs out periodically), you can use the foil shreds. You can also use strips of fabric or shredded newspaper from home.
