Laser Engrave and Cut Thanksgiving Wine Tags

If you have a laser, use these Thanksgiving wine tag files to create individual or full sets to gift or sell this season. This beginner laser project uses basswood, making it an inexpensive DIY.

I’ll use the xTool M1 Ultra for this project, a 10 watt diode laser, to engrave and cut out my designs. You will also need some paper masking, a few wood beads, and some twine.

Thanksgiving Wine Tags

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I’ve been playing with my xTool M1 Ultra. In my video review, I shared so many projects made with the blades, pen, and foil tools. Today, I’m going to share a perfect beginner Thanksgiving laser craft to make with the laser module.

Below, I’ll list the supplies and the step by step process to make these, including the design file! This way, you can get started on your project right away.

If you love this project but can’t get started right now, share it to Facebook or save it to a laser crafts pin board. Either way will make it easy to find when you’re ready to begin.

Materials Needed for This Project

Prepare the Basswood

Before we load the material into the machine, cover the front (or the front and back) of the basswood with the paper masking. Be sure to brayer / smooth out any creases or bubbles.

Load the material into the machine. Please ensure that it is level, as uneven material can make laser cutting and engraving have poor results.

Load the Design File and Settings

Within XCS (the free xTool Creative Space software), open a new project, and drag in the Thanksgiving wine tags SVG set (digital download above). Before adjusting, please make note if the size it came in is correct for your project – my wine tags are 3.5 inches high (89 mm).

Click on the black layer and set it to Engrave in the processing type. Set the power to 55, the speed to 100, leave the pass at 1, and change the LPC to 120.

Select the red layer and set it to Cut in the processing menu. Set the power to 100, the speed to 6, and the passes to 2. Note: if you’ve already done your testing with masking and it works at 1 pass for you, please leave it at 1. I had a couple of snags, so I increased the passes.

Distance, Marking, and Processing

Once all parameters have been entered, drag the laser machine’s module so the red crosshair is over the secured material. Measure the distance by clicking on the ruler.

Select the mark button and choose rectangle. Position the crosshair to the upper left most portion of the material and select the white button on the front of the machine to lock the first position. Move the crosshair to the bottom right most portion of the material and select the white button to lock in the rectangle. Choose end marking and done to secure the marked area.

Move the tags into the marked area. Note: you might want to process tags individually (shown in the video) or all at once. My 10 watt laser estimated about 50 minutes if I processed them all together.

If desired, frame the material by selecting the framing button to show you where the laser will process. Then, select Process, Start, and press the silver button on the front of the machine. It will process the engravings first and then the two cuts.

Clean Up and Assembly

Remove the items from the machine and clean off the edges before removing the masking. Remove the masking and spray with the sealant, following the instructions.

Cut a piece of twine, fold it in half and run it through the hole at the top. Add a small bit of ribbon, pull the twine taught, and string on beads before tying the top.

Slip the twine opening over the top of a wine bottle. Your laser cut Thanksgiving wine tag project is done and ready for gifting!
