Laser Cut Stir Sticks

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I’ve been celebrating the little bits of fun because… Well, friends, there’s a lot going on in the world and I’m getting a bit overwhelmed.

Today, I whipped up a set of drink stir sticks just to have something fun to put out for us on March 17th. I’m including these as a free laser cut file template bundle for you, too, so that you can sell them or just use them as I am.

These are so much fun and a great way to use up the long edges of acrylic boards.

Materials Needed for This Project

I used 3mm (1/8th inch) translucent acrylic for these in orange, green, and yellow. You can always use cast acrylic in solids, as well.

You will also need the free St Patrick’s Day stir stick laser cut bundle set.

You may use a CO2 or diode laser, however, you will need a CO2 like my xTool P Series CO2 laser for translucent acrylic. If you’re using a diode, please make sure to run a material test – your goal is to only use colors that cut smooth on the edges.

I also wash all acrylic pieces for food use, so I used a dish soap, water, and single use cloth to prepare these for use.

How to Make Acrylic Stir Sticks

This is a very beginner laser friendly project. You will need cast acrylic – solids or translucent is fine, but remember: do not use plywood, mirror acrylic, or any filled or extruded acrylics (glitter, confetti, etc.).

Set Up File and Parameters

Load the cast acrylic into the laser, securing well and ensuring it is level.

Open the XCS file or import the design into the laser software.

Ensure the sizes are correct – the tall should measure 8.99 inches (228.35mm); the short should measure 5.65 inches (141.35).

Set parameters for the acrylic (default xTool settings for translucent acrylic are accurate).

Note: you can cut all designs from one color or change it up like I did.

Process and Clean

Process the stir sticks by color and/or size.

Remove the St Patrick’s Day drink stirrers and clean before packaging for sale or use.

Note: Dish soap and clean water are all you need for a thorough cleaning, however, make sure they are 100% dry before packaging.
