Today, I went to the world’s most inexpensive craft store and picked up a few items to create a lighted gnome as a challenge from a reader. And you can even have a tasty treat while making it, as this easy project was done in less than 10 minutes while I snacked on some Fiddle Faddle!

Every time I go to the dollar store, I pick up a box of that deliciously bad popcorn. I can’t resist and it’s the only place I ever see it. But back to the craft…

If you love this but need to head to the store, please save this to a DIY Christmas crafts pin board or share it to Facebook. Either way will make this easy to find when you’re ready to begin.

Dollar Tree Gnome Supplies

For this project, check your stash before heading to the store – you might have some of this on hand. Below are the supplies I used and should be used as inspiration.

  • vase
  • cotton mop head
  • scarf
  • wood bead or flat back
  • battery operated fairy lights
  • glue gun and glue sticks
  • scissors
  • optional, sticky hook and loop closure (like Velcro®)

Additional ideas for supplies: use old flannel shirts or pajama bottoms for the hat, a mini Christmas ornament for a nose, or even a tinsel tree for the body as we’ve done with this adorable Dollar Tree tinsel tree witch gnome.

Alternative Design for Making a Glowing Christmas Gnome

For this easy Dollar Tree Christmas craft, I turned the vase upside down to easily access the lights. That said, you could keep the vase upright and not glue on the beard.

For this, you would add the lights into the vase and rest the mop on top of the opening. Additionally, instead of gluing down the hat, you would just add it right on top of the mop.

The nose could be attached to the hat or to the mop. I would suggest the hat because the mop moves and shifts, making it more likely the nose would pop off.

How to Make a Dollar Tree Lighted Gnome

Below are the step by step instructions for making a dollar tree Christmas gnome with lights. Keep this page open and follow along, using the comments section below for questions or suggestions.

First, install the batteries to the fairy lights. Turn the vase upside down (opening at the bottom). I used a small piece of sticky hook and loop to stick the battery pack to the inside of the vase.

Remove the mop from the packaging and find the center join (underside). Hot glue to secure the center join to the bottom of the base after removing any labels.

Glue the mop head to the vase with lights.

Optional: uncoil the mop strands. This takes a bit more time but it makes the beard so much more full.

Double over one end of the dollar store scarf. Cut the folded portion into a rectangle at 12 inches by the width of your body and beard + 1 inch (or so) for a seam allowance. This should be 24 inches long and your width.

Fold up the bottom portion of the ends of the scarf (length wise) on the ‘wrong side’ of the fabric to create a small brim. Fold the scarf with wrong sides together so that the brim ends are together (folded fabric at the top) and glue up the sides. Once dry, turn the hat right sides out.

Add a brim to either end of the rectangle to create the edge of the easy gnome hat.

Use a piece of the fleece from step 5 to create a bunched, tied off section at the top of the hat. Optional: slice the ends into strips for detail.
