Materials You’ll Need for This Cute Fall Craft Idea
I used the following, but be sure to check your supplies before heading out. I would only use a fabric pumpkin for this (not a foam or glass) because we really need it to adhere.
You can absolutely use a pumpkin pick (a pumpkin with a wood or wire dowel attached) and pop that into the body, as well.
- ~4-6 inch faux fabric pumpkin (mine was a wool fabric)
- Sherpa Fleece (or any other 2-way stretch fabric)
- a wool ball or bead
- faux fur or yarn for the beard
- weight (Poly Pellets) and stuffing (Poly-Fil)
- embroidery thread and needle
- optional: copper wire for decorative swirls
- hot glue gun, glue sticks, scissors, and a craft knife
How to Make a Dollar Tree Pumpkin Gnome
Below are the step by step instructions for this easy fall project. Keep this page open and follow along. If you want to print off the instructions for a craft night, scroll to the bottom of this page to the card, select print, and have fun!
First, remove the tags from the pumpkin with scissors. Be careful as to not rip the fabric apart.
Next, ensure that the stretch of the fabric is on the horizontal. Fold it and cut a 6 x 6 inch square, making the cut 12 inches wide by 6 inches high.
Fold the fabric right-sides together and glue along the short vertical edge. Press and hold so the glue joins within the thick fibers of the Sherpa fleece. Note: you can sew this, as well.
Thread the embroidery needle and use a running stitch at the bottom of the glued fabric, pulling very tightly and securing with knots. Flip the body right-sides out.
Add a small amount of weight and then fill with stuffing so the body is very stuffed. Use the embroidery needle and thread to create another running stitch along the top.
Pull tight and tuck the top of the gathered fabric into the center of the pumpkin. The goal is to get a nice, flat top for the pumpkin to stick to.
Use an X-Acto knife to create a faux fur beard. I created a three inch wide beard so it would fill out a good bit of the front of the gnome. Glue the top 1/4 inch down of the faux fur beard to cover the fabric backing.
Add a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom of the dollar store pumpkin and place onto the body. Hold to ensure adhesion.
Add the beard to the body just under the pumpkin gnome hat with hot glue. Then, add the gnome nose to the beard.
Use any decorations you’d like. For mine, I wrapped the copper wire around a pen and then poked into the pumpkin. I secured it with hot glue and this cute fall gnome idea was ready.
