Tips For Making This Cute Mummy Cupcakes Recipe
- Because it is such a fine product, cocoa powder can clump in the container, so sift the powder before using it.
- If you don’t have buttermilk and don’t want to run to the store, use regular milk and add 1 teaspoon of vinegar. Mix it and add to the recipe.
- If you don’t have Instant Coffee on hand, use a teaspoon of brewed coffee instead.
- Sometimes I will use sea salt in my recipes instead of iodized table salt. Either of these will work great for these mummy cupcakes.

How To Make Chocolate Mummy Cupcakes
Each step for this cupcake recipe is detailed below to make it easier. Keep this page open while you are creating your mummy cupcakes. If you would rather have a printable recipe, scroll down and select the print button.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place liners in two standard-size muffin tins, making 24 cupcakes. Set them aside. In a large bowl add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, instant coffee, baking soda, and salt.

Whisk the dry ingredients until well combined.

In another mixing bowl, combine the eggs, buttermilk, and oil.

Use an electric hand or stand mixer to combine the wet ingredients.

Add the dry ingredients to the bowl of the wet ingredients.

Using an electric hand or stand mixer, beat to combine. Scrape the sides and bottom often to ensure all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Fold in the mini chocolate chips.

Divide the batter among the cupcake liners until they are about ⅔ full. Bake in the preheated oven for 22-24 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow them to cool for at least 30 minutes before decorating.
Ingredients For The White Frosting
As mentioned, this recipe uses shortening instead of butter. It will taste similar but the texture will feel different, so use my easy buttercream recipe if you prefer.
- Shortening (if using butter, it will have a yellow tint)
- Powdered sugar
- Salt
- Butter flavoring
- Milk
- Candy eyeballs

How To Make The Frosting
If you’re used to buttercream frosting, this shortening frosting will come together a bit differently. You can easily substitute one for the other.
If you have a basketweave tip, you can use it, but I used a flat frosting tip like this. It makes it easy to get the ribbon look (without having any skill).

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the shortening, salt, butter flavoring, and powdered sugar.

Mix on low speed and gradually add in the milk, about 1 tablespoon at a time. Increase the speed and mix on high for about 30 seconds until small peaks form. Transfer the frosting to a piping bag.

Attach the candy eyes by placing a small dot of frosting where you want the eyes. Place the eyes on the cupcakes.

To frost the cupcakes, use a flat (or basketweave) frosting tip (number 44 or 48). Pipe using a crisscross or basketweave pattern, creating the mummy’s face. Grab one before they disappear and enjoy!
