How to Store Homemade Sugar Scrubs (and Gifting Tips)

You might be making this for yourself or as a gift. Either way, please read through these bullet points – some are very important and others are just so helpful.

  • Store any loose sugar scrub in an airtight container for up to the life of the oil you use (coconut oil is about 24 months). If you add in any extras, estimate their shelf life an use this rule: the sugar scrub lasts as long as the SHORTEST life of all of the ingredients.
  • Loose sugar scrubs like this are best when packaged in single-use containers. If water enters the scrub, mold or bacteria can develop. And just, yuck.
  • I’m asked all the time about my favorite containers. I buy two types: if I’m making a scrub using fragrance oils, I buy these twist top jars to give during the holidays. If I use essential oils in the recipe, I store and gift sugar scrubs in these jars.
  • Storing sugar scrubs away from the shower is best and outside of the bathroom is even better. The enemy of a loose sugar scrub is moisture.
  • Storing a sugar scrub in the refrigerator can be refreshing on tired feet but it won’t extend the life of the scrub.
  • If you are gifting a sugar scrub, consider adding a tag which has the best before date, tips on use, and storage instructions.
  • Create your own pedicure gift using a large mason jar, this sugar scrub recipe in a small jar or sealable bag, a foot file or pumice stone, a small foot lotion, and these heel socks (we are OBSESSED with these in my house).

How to Make a Sugar Scrub Safely

  • Do not reduce the amount of a single fragrance oil – adjust both. If you’re new to creating your own DIY bath and skin care recipes, I recommend sticking to the exact ingredients shared here.
  • Can you substitute brown sugar for the white, granulated sugar? You can! It will change the color and scent slightly, but if you it on hand, give it a try.
  • If you are not new to creating homemade body scrub recipes, please note you can use essential oils in scrubs, however, please do research on hot oils and adjust the recipe. Some essential oils should not be used directly on the skin no matter how good they smell, while others can be used with dilution.
  • If you or someone you’re gifting this to have a nut allergy, substitute the sweet almond oil or consider a different recipe like the lemon, coffee, or orange scrub recipes shared in this post. Avoid coconut oil and use nut-allergy friendly oils like olive oil, jojoba oil, or avocado. Please note that grapeseed oil, coconut oil, and other seed oils could trigger a reaction.

I love this combination of scents to exfoliate your skin, heels, and elbows. Please take care if using this on your face – the ingredients are fine, but sugar scrubs are very abrasive.

To use this loose sugar scrub, scoop a portion into the hand or onto a clean, wet poof and rub in a circular motion on the skin. For stubborn dry heels, soak feet in hot water first for about 10 minutes and then use the scrub and a pumice stone.
