Tips for Making Red, White, and Blue Cupcakes

  • Always sift flour, baking soda, or sugars before using. This will give you a smoother batter.
  • If you don’t have a toothpick to see if the cupcakes are baked properly, use the spring test by touching your fingertip to the middle of the cupcake. If it springs back, they are done.
  • To make sure you get an even amount of batter in each cavity of the cupcake pan, use a small ice cream scoop, rising in between colors, as you layer the red and blue batter.
  • If these cupcakes will be served outdoors in the summer, keep the frosting on the thicker side. Bring them out just before the dessert is served.

Notes for Making Homemade Cupcakes

  • You may substitute half and half or bump up the flavor even more with a flavored coffee creamer if you don’t have milk on hand.
  • If you don’t have any patriotic sprinkles, you can color granulated sugar with red or blue food coloring.
  • Using whole eggs in this recipe (rather than just the white) will change the colors of the cupcake just a bit.
