Make a no-sew patriotic gnome for Independence Day. He’s perfect for a wreath, entryway, or mantel.

Patriotic Gnome

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, we really dig making gnomes for basically every occasion. They’re simple, fun and ridiculously silly. Which, frankly, makes us love them even more.

This patriotic gnome is no exception. I wasn’t really sure what I was planning when I started. I had a handful of ingredients and a little bit of an idea, but the result was insanely cute and, though he’s really tiny, this July 4th gnome is so perfect. Let’s get started.

Tips to Make this July 4th Gnome

  • Click here to get your free printable patriotic gnome template. You don’t have to use it, but it will sure make it easier.
  • If you can’t find the floral wire, you can use a wire hanger. It will not be quite as flexible as the floral wire in this patriotic gnome.
  • No silver sparkly pompom? You could top your gnome’s hat with some curled silver ribbon or another star.
  • Make the mustache bushier by widening the rectangle you cut. Make the gnome’s mustache longer by cutting the little rectangle longer.

I can't get over how adorable this patriotic gnome is! Such a simple gnome for July 4th--it's no-sew and seriously easy. But the result? A cute Independence Day gnome anyone would love.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Active Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $5

Materials

  • Small Amount of Polyfill
  • 1/4 Cup Dry Rice
  • 6-inch Length of Floral Wire
  • White Craft Fur
  • Polymer Clay (for gnome nose, hands and feet--can alternatively use ½-inch wooden beads):
  • 1/4 dime-sized portion of brown
  • 1 dime-sized portion of white
  • Royal Blue Craft Felt
  • Red Craft Felt
  • White Craft Felt
  • Printable Template/Pattern
  • White Sparkle Pom Pom
  • 3-5 White Foam Stars

Tools

  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Scissors
  • Exacto Knife (to cut the fur)
  • Wax Paper
  • Oven

Instructions

  1. Start making your gnome nose by combining the brown and white polymer clay until a flesh-color is consistent throughout. Roll the clay into a neat ball, making sure it’s smooth all the way around.Bake in the oven per the polymer clay package directions. Allow to cool before touching. Set aside.
  2. Cut out the following: 1 body from printable pattern in blue felt, 1 circle base from printable pattern in blue felt, 1 rectangle from printable pattern in blue felt (hat rim), 1 beard from printable pattern in craft fur, 1 tiny rectangle (mustache) in craft fur, 1 triangle hat shape from printable pattern in red felt, AND 1 each of the stripes in white felt.
  3. Hot glue the two straight-edges of the gnome body together, creating an open cone. Hot glue the base to the wide opening of the gnome body piece cone. Turn this inside out. Fill with rice. Fill remaining area with polyfill.
  4. Hot Glue beard to top of gnome body. With the small rectangle of craft fur, split the fur with your fingers long-ways and kind of finger brush it into the shape of a mustache. Hot glue it in place at the top of the beard. Hot glue nose to top of mustache.
  5. Place a bead of hot glue along one side of the hat shape. Roll the other side of the hat shape over and affix it in a cone shape with the hot glue line. Line-up the white stripes parallel around the hat vertically, leaving space between. Hot glue in place. Allow hot glue to dry completely.
  6. Place a bead of hot glue on one short side of the blue felt rectangle and place that end along the seam of the hat, on the base of the hat. Hot glue the rectangle in place around the rest of the circumference of the hat. Hot glue the stars randomly all over the blue brim of the hat.
  7. Stuff a small portion of polyfill up into the hat, followed by the floral wire to both get the polyfill all the way up into the tip of the hat, but also to get the floral wire into the tip as well so you can use it to help the hat hold its eventual shape. Finish stuffing the hat with polyfill.
  8. Tuck the remaining end of the floral wire into the gnome’s still open body, pulling the hat down to barely wrinkle over the nose. Hot glue the hat in place, even putting a drop on the nose to hold the wrinkle in place. Bend the top of the hat over.
  9. Place a bit of hot glue on the tip of the hat and place the sparkler pom pom onto the tip of the hat. photo tutorial collage of how to make a patriotic gnome for july 4th
