How to Paint Buffalo Plaid Pattern (Buffalo Check Tutorial)

First, add a base coat to the wooden pumpkin with the off white craft paint. Allow the paint to dry before moving on.

Next, apply painter’s tape vertically through the center of the pumpkin plaque, starting your first piece of tape in the center. Continue applying vertical stripes of painter’s tape out to the right and left edges, using a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.

Use a dry brush to apply a light coat of medium orange craft paint. Then ,remove the strips of painter’s tape, and set them aside to use later. Allow the paint to completely dry.

Note: if you let the brush strokes show, it adds a rustic or farmhouse look.

Apply painter’s tape horizontally on the pumpkin plaque, starting from the center of the pumpkin again. Continue applying vertical stripes of painter’s tape out to the top and bottom edges, using a small piece of painter’s tape as a spacer. Burnish the edges of the tape with a fingernail or bone folder.

Use a dry brush to apply a coat of medium orange craft paint. Remove the painter’s tape, and allow the paint to completely dry.

Once the project has dried, add a layer of dark orange craft paint to each area where the squares intersect within the buffalo check design. Use a flat brush to get straight edges on the squares. Use the dark orange craft paint to paint the pumpkin stem as well. Allow the project to dry or speed it up with a blow dryer or heat gun.

To make the bow, measure and cut a 16” length of burlap ribbon and both a 24″ and 12″ length of natural jute twine. Fold the ends of the ribbon to the center to create a loop. Then fold the 24″ twine in half and in half again and place it on the burlap loop. Wrap the 12″ jute twine tightly around the center of the ribbon several time, securing with a knot.

Attach silk leaves to each side of the stem using your glue gun loaded with a glue stick. Then cut a 12” length of burlap ribbon, and fold in half. Cut a “v” into both ends and glue it to the pumpkin stem. Glue the ribbon and twine bow on top of that.

If you’d like to hang the plaque, measure and cut a 20” length of the twine. Flip the plaque over, and use the glue gun to attach the ends of the twine to the right and left sides of the pumpkin.
