Free Thanksgiving Lettering Practice Sheets
Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I love to practice hand lettering and modern calligraphy. Over the years, I’ve shared hundreds of free practice sheets in the subscriber library for you to do the same.
Today, I was thinking about Thanksgiving dinner and wanted to letter some place cards on watercolor paper. I was a bit stumped as to styles, so I created a little practice to help me determine what I wanted. Guess what: I still can’t choose between them!
If you would, please save or share this page. It helps the site grow and I am very appreciative.

You Only Need TWO Pens or a Digital Program
To practice, you can do it the old fashioned way (pen and paper) or with an iPad and an image app. The app I use when I practice digitally is the iPad app called Procreate. I like it because it’s easy to use, lets me load a lot of brushes I can practice with, and is only a one-time fee (instead of a subscription). Do a search for others you might like.
If you’re choosing pen and paper, which is what I recommend for beginners, you only need two pens. Each pen is available individually (you don’t need sets). I recommend:
- this small pen – It’s an industry staple because it never fails to force a good technique.
- this large pen – This one is dual-tipped for both brush lettering AND building letters (one of my favorite ways to “cheat” at hand lettering).
Where to Begin if You’re BRAND NEW
If you are new to this lettering thing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Instead of this practice, I recommend starting with the free basic strokes set inside the lettering library.
Although this set is great, you’ll need to practice the basic tenets of the art. It’s just basic shapes and I’ve even recorded a private video just for you to watch to become familiar with each stroke.
How to Get the Lettering Practice for Free
This set is 100% free to my subscribers. If you’re not already, subscribe here first and I’ll send you the password immediately (it is always at the bottom of every email I send).
If you are already subscribed, access the Free Lettering Library, type in the password, find the “One Off Lettering Designs and Art Prints” section, and select “Thanksgiving.”
Once you access the library, you can print the PDF or save the PNGs to load into a digital practice program. As mentioned, I suggest Procreate for the variety of brushes.
