Tips For Making Your Shiplap Christmas Sign

  • I like to visit the Dollar Tree to check out what wood signs they have in stock – sometimes I get some really great signs in the Plus section.
  • Making easy signs like this is a quick craft and are a perfect Christmas craft idea for a night in with friends or family.
  • When working with acrylic paint, your sign may require 2-3 coats. Allow 24-48 hours for the paint to completely dry before moving on to the next step.
  • If you want to leave the sides of the frame natural, use masking or painter’s tape to protect the inside edges of the frame from paint.
  • The sizing of each letter on your template will depend on your personal liking and the size of the pre-made sign.
  • Using the template you print will help keeps the letters even and aligned.

Notes For Working With Acrylic Paint on Your Sign

  • As wood can be uneven, you may want to sand your sign before applying any primer, sealant, or paint. A layer of gesso will help make for a smoother surface.
  • When using acrylic paint on wood, consider using a primer before applying the paint. This will seal the wood and allow the paint to go on more evenly.
  • The best brush to use when painting wood with acrylics is a synthetic brush. It lasts longer and coats your wood more evenly.
