Tips to Make Maple Cupcakes

  • First, let’s be clear, I’m not here to tell you how you have to make a cupcake. No, you can use whatever your favorite cupcake base is for these and I did loosely base this recipe on my lazy girl cupcakes here. But, what I’m telling you right now is that, if you want this wildly delicious maple experience, follow this recipe.
  • Don’t get yourself confused and use regular bacon or bacon bits. You’re denying yourself the most amazing taste-explosion experience of candied bacon. Just saying.
  • Let’s talk icing. If you’re not a buttercream icing kind of person, I get that. I totally respect it. But if you’re not into cream cheese icing, I also respect that. In this instance, though, we’re not using either of those. We are going over the top with a brown sugar icing. And it is epic.

  • 3 Tablespoons white sugar

For the Cupcakes:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon molasses
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 Tablespoons heavy cream, or additional milk
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract, if desired

For the Brown Sugar Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3-4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract, if desired

Instructions

  1. To make the candied bacon, preheat you oven to 325 degrees and line a cookie sheet with foil and lay the bacon flat across it.
  2. Cover the bacon with about 1/2 of the sugar, then turn the bacon over and cover with the remaining sugar.
  3. Place a second sheet of foil over the bacon then place a second cookie sheet on top before placing this in the oven and baking for 15-20 minutes, until the bacon is crisp and cooked through.
  4. Remove the bacon from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature while you assemble the rest of the ingredients for the cupcakes.
  5. To make the cupcakes preheat your oven to 375 degrees and line two cupcake tins with liners and set aside.
  6. Whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  7. In a second bowl, cream together the butter, white sugar, brown sugar and molasses until the mixture becomes light and creamy (about 2 minutes).
  8. Add in the eggs, milk, heavy cream and maple extract, mixing thoroughly, then add in the dry ingredients, stirring until the mixture is well combined.
  9. Crumble the bacon and fold in about 3/4 of the bacon pieces.
  10. Scoop 2 tbsp of the cupcake batter into each of the cupcake cavities and bake for 18-24 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center of the centermost cupcake comes out clean.
  11. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before icing.
  12. To make the icing, cream together the butter, brown sugar and 3 cups of the powdered sugar until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  13. Add in the heavy cream and maple extract then beat the mixture for about 2 minutes until it becomes smooth. Add more sugar, as desired.
  14. Fill a piping bag with the frosting and decorate each of the cupcakes with a swirl of the brown sugar frosting, starting from the inside, working in a big circle outward toward the edges and then back towards the center.
  15. Sprinkle a few pieces of the candied bacon over the top of each cupcake and enjoy! photo collage tutorial of how to make maple bacon cupcakes
