Tips to Make Grinch Heart Cupcakes
- If you love Starburst candies, guess what?! I used exactly that to make the hearts for this fun Grinch treat. But, if you don’t feel like candy on top of a cupcake is your thing, that’s ok. You can use marshmallow fondant in the same way–totally interchangeable.
- Be sure to start with an easy vanilla cupcake recipe. I like to use my Lazy Girl Cupcakes, a no-fail cupcake recipe that is literally so soft and fluffy, you can’t help but love them.
- If you don’t have a star decorating tip (or any decorating tips for that matter), you can absolutely spoon-on some icing on top of your cupcakes. Just be sure to make it look super messy, as that’s how the fur on the Grinch looks. You know, because you definitely want your cupcakes to stay in character. LOL!

Grinch Cupcakes
If you love having Grinch movie night with the family, you have to make these Grinch cupcakes and show the kids how you can grow a heart by two sizes in just a few bites! LOL!
Ingredients
- 12 of your favorite vanilla cupcakes
- 1 can of your favorite vanilla frosting
- 36 red Starburst candies
- Green food coloring
Instructions
- Doing 1 cupcake at a time, unwrap and warm 3 red Starburst candies in the microwave for 10 seconds.
- Work 2 of the candies together, forming them into a ball and then flattening them, while rounding the top into two bubbles and making the other side pointy, to form a LARGE heart.
- Set heart aside on wax paper to cool.
- With the remaining single candy, work it into a ball and flatten, then form a SMALL heart.
- Set heart aside on the wax paper to cool.
- With your largest decorating tip, press into the top of the cupcake off-center, creating a well, followed by two additional wells, forming a, generally, heart-shaped hole. Save hole tops.
- Place LARGE heart inside the well in the cupcake.
- Replace hole tops on cupcake.
- Repeat for all cupcakes.
- Mix 10-15 drops of green food coloring into your vanilla frosting, stirring until the color is consistent.
- Place star tip in piping bag and fill with frosting.
- Frost each cupcake in a swirl, turning the piping bag as you pipe.
- Place a SMALL heart on top of each cupcake.
- Serve!
