Although my own home is not decorated in coastal farmhouse decor, my friend is all about that beach theme for her condo. I took her love of beach decor and made this easy sign. The best part is that it is easily customized – larger, smaller, shelf sitter, or wall hanging – so you can resize the free anchor SVG to fit your project.

Tips to Make A Beach Farmhouse Sign

  • Start off by selecting navy vinyl. I used this permanent navy vinyl and I still have a ton leftover.
  • You can use permanent vinyl or heat transfer vinyl (iron on) for this project.
  • File types are available in SVG, PNG, EPS, and DXF formats for use in Cricut Design Space, Silhouette, Silhouette Designer Edition, and more cutting software programs.
  • If you paint your wood sign or other blank, allow it to dry for 24-48 hours, especially if it has two coats. If you add heat or reposition vinyl without doing so, you could lift up the paint.
  • For a project in a high-sun or outdoor location, use a sealant, let it cure per the package instructions, and THEN apply the vinyl. Permanent vinyl needs no sealant on top of it.
  • Get ready to have fun. Sometimes it’s cathartic to complete easy and quick projects like wood signs.

Materials

Tools

  • Cutting Machine and Fine Point Blade
  • Light or Standard Grip Mat
  • Vinyl Scraper
  • Scissors or Paper Cutter
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  • Transfer Tape
  • Cricut Weeder tool
  • Optional, Mod Podge
  • Optional, 1” Foam brush

Instructions

Directions to use the cut the file:

  1. Cut off a portion of vinyl and apply the vinyl to the light or standard grip mat. Note that your vinyl size is determined by your project size.
  2. Upload the Anchor SVG file into your cutting software (I am using Cricut Design Space), and insert the image to start a new project.
  3. Resize the image to a height of about 4.75 inches (or to fit your blank).
  4. Select “Attach” to get the Cricut to cut the file as a single piece. Select “Make It”, and set the material type to “Vinyl”.
  5. Follow the prompts (remember to mirror if using HTV) to load the vinyl and cut the elements.  Unload the mat when the Cricut is finished cutting.

Directions for making the sign:

  1. After the design is cut, trim transfer tape to the project size.
  2. Remove all excess vinyl leaving the design elements alone on their sheet of plastic liner.
  3. Place the transfer tape over the design elements, and gently smooth the elements and tape together, eliminating any bubbles.
  4. Place the design elements onto the wood, and adhere by rubbing the vinyl into the wood. Use a scraper to get it into the wood well.
  5. Optional: ModPodge over the wood and design. I don't recommend adding a sealant on top of permanent vinyl because it is not needed.
  6. Add a twist or two of rope to each side of the wood, about one inch from the edge. To do this, place a generous amount of hot glue onto the back of the wood plank an inch or two from the short edges and wrap the rope around twice. Hold the rope in place until the hot glue sets.
  7. Repeat step 7 with the other piece of rope on the opposite side. photo collage of how to make a coastal farmhouse sign for a housewarming gift

Notes

You can use permanent or heat transfer vinyl for this project.

If painting or sealing, do so before the vinyl is applied and let them fully cure before vinyl application.
