Garden Toadstools Made with Terra Cotta Pots and Saucers
Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, vacationing with friends is a little joy I hold dear. Being in Seattle, a beach trip is quick and easy for us and meeting friends at the coast makes it feel more like a getaway.
This spring, a friend and I were heading to the beach and she decided to bring along a craft so she could match this clay pot garden gnome I made years ago. It went viral for a reason: it is easy, fast, and SO cute! She brought her matching paint and we set to work.

Tips for Making Garden Mushrooms from Clay Pots
While making these, I worked through some issues and learned a few tips. Here are my biggest takeaways after having made two sets of these now.
- Be sure to use a very solid glue (I chose E6000) – hot glue will not work for this craft by itself. If you want an immediate seal, alternate the hot glue and the E6000 (use generously).
- Vary the size of the saucers for different looks. In this craft, we stacked same-size saucers and differently-sized ones. It really changes up the look.
- Head to the thrift store or garage sales to look for terra cotta pots. You can easily clean them up and, with a base primer, can cover up anything unsightly like soil stains.
- Keep them bare or give them fun patterns with polka dots, stripes, or shapes.
- These would look so cute with an outdoor fairy garden or other whimsical garden decor.
- You can use an outdoor paint for longer-lasting color, but remember, you still should seal them.

Clay Pot Mushrooms for the Garden
Use terra cotta pots and saucers to create these adorable clay pot mushrooms for the garden. A little paint, glue, and sealant make these a fun spring or summer craft idea you can take outside.
Materials
- 2 Clay Pots
- 3 Clay Saucers
- Acrylic Paint (I used white, teal, and red)
- UV Spray Sealant
Tools
- E6000
- Foam Paintbrushes
- Pencil with an Eraser
Instructions
- Clean the pots and use the foam paintbrush to paint them with the desired base coat color (might take two coats). I used white. Paint all saucers, adding details with a pouncer sponge and eraser dipped in paint.
- Glue the saucers to the pots using e6000.
- Paint decorations (dots, stripes, etc.) and spray with sealant (I use two coats). Display outside!
Notes
You can turn the pots upside down for a wider mushroom base.
Watch for sales at thrift stores or second-hand stores for pots and saucers to clean up.
Spray each year with another coat of sealant for lasting color.
