Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I have been sharing creative cupcake recipes and decorations for years. These little treats – whether full sized or minis – are my absolute favorite dessert because they’re so versatile.

With one of the most popular vanilla cupcake recipes on the Internet, you can believe I was asked to make an easy chocolate cupcake recipe! I’ll pop that below but you could also pick up some pre-made cupcakes to save time.

Occasions to Serve Dirt Cupcakes

These are so cute and can be displayed in so many fun ways. Here are a few we’ve done:

  • Construction Party: Use a child’s toy truck and add the completed cupcakes, along with some cookie “dirt” to the back of a dump truck placed on the dessert table
  • Garden Party: Place each cupcake in a mini clay pot or on top of a pair child’s garden gloves (also good for a party favor)
  • Halloween Party: Place a grave and shovel cupcake toppers (we used these) in each cupcake and serve on a slate slab with scattered spider rings or candy eyeballs.
  • Nature or Camping Party: If you’re having an outdoors-themed party, these cupcakes are adorable when placed onto a table with mini stuffed forest animals, flowers, twigs, or faux leaves.

Ingredients and Supplies

Below, I’ll put the measurements for 12 cupcakes, but the recipe can be halved or doubled.

You can also use a piping bag with a 1M tip or a plastic bag with a corner cut off to easily frost the cupcakes. Most of the cake will be covered, so a fancy tip is not necessary.

How to Make Dirt and Worms Cupcakes

Before we get started, we’ve also made this fun cupcake decorating idea into a full cake. Round, square, and rectangular cakes all work well in the theme.

Below are the instructions to keep this page open and follow along. If you prefer a printable recipe, scroll down.

First, prepare and bake the cupcakes. You will need to let them fully cool before frosting, as the frosting will not firm up on warm cakes.

Next, put the Oreo™ cookies into a plastic bag and crush them into very fine pieces. You can use the back of a spoon to get any clumps.

Note: you can opt to remove the frosting from inside the cookies or leave it. Both ways will work.

Make the frosting or scoop tub frosting into a piping bag or plastic zip top bag. Add a swirl of chocolate frosting to the top of each cupcake – remember, it doesn’t have to be pretty, as we will be covering most of it.

Spoon the crushed Oreo™ cookies onto the frosting of each cake. Use as little or as much as you like but start with each getting 2-3 teaspoons to add to the overall look.

Cut a few of the worms into smaller pieces (halves or thirds). Add one full worm and a partial worm to each cupcake.

Notes

If making these using premade cupcakes and frosting, you will be done in 15 minutes.

If making these from scratch, plan on at least 1 hour and 15 minutes. While the cupcakes are baking, make the frosting to save on time, but remember to fully cool the cupcakes before frosting (can be put in the refrigerator).

Cupcakes and frosting can be made up to two days ahead. Store pre-frosted cupcakes on counter in an airtight container. Store frosting in the refrigerator in an air tight container.
