Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, we’re gearing up for the 4th and using the items we have on hand to craft when it’s too hot to go outside. Today, we’re working with some basic supplies and dollar store finds.

You’ll need jumbo popsicle sticks (craft sticks) but if you can’t find them, regular-sized ones work great, too.

If you like this 4th of July DIY but can’t get started right away, save this to a summer craft pin board or share it on Facebook. It will be easy to find when you’re ready to begin.

Tips for Setting Up This DIY

While you can definitely use PVA (Elmer’s school glue) for this craft, hot glue will go faster. If you’re setting this up for little ones, considering building the hats in advance so they have fun painting them.

We use extra craft sticks to secure the hat together. If you have younger children, be sure to add a few extra – a little more strength will make these last.

If you want to display these around the house, add a ribbon or twine hanger to the back. The kids love to hang these on their bedroom doors.

How to Make This Uncle Sam DIY

Paint 3 craft sticks red, 2 craft sticks white, and 2 blue. Let them dry.

Take the scissors and trim one craft stick that has no paint to the width of the hat (red, white, red, white, red craft sticks). Use the glue gun to add the cut craft stick to the back of the hat pieces to secure all of them together.

Trim one blue craft stick to the width of the hat and add it and the non-trimmed blue stick to the bottom. Note: you can cut another stick and use it to add stability to the back.

Paint three stars white, let dry, and glue them to the blue portion of the hat.

Cut between 22-24 mop head strings from the mop. Glue 12 to the BACK of the blue craft stick on the back. Make a second row and then trim to desired length.
