Tips to Make Lemon Tea Bombs

  • My favorite way to make tea bombs is with isomalt like this. Isomalt is a sugar substitute and while you can use real sugar, isomalt is not quite as sweet as sugar. That’s a nice balance to the packet which is also sweetened. That way you’re not just having a whole cup of sugar in each tea cup. If you wanted to make this with sugar, you’ll need to heat the sugar on the stove, though, as opposed to the microwave like I did.
  • When you’re handling your tea bombs while you’re assembling them, one thing I recommend is to use some thick gloves. That way you won’t leave fingerprints on them. They’re a little sticky, so just the warm heat of your fingertips will seriously mark the tea bombs if you don’t.
  • Speaking of sticky, these tea bombs are so sticky, if your work surface isn’t lint-free, they’ll pick it up. And lint in your tea is blegh. So, cover your work surface in parchment paper or use a lint roller – and NEVER lay these on a towel unless it’s lint free.

Instructions

  1. Place isomalt into a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on 1 minute increments, stirring between each increment, until the isomalt is melted completely.
  2. Add yellow gel food coloring to the isomalt and stir until the color is consistent throughout.
  3. Add about 1 1/2 tbsp of the melted isomalt to a mold cavity, using your measuring spoon to gently push the isomalt all around the edges of the mold cavity. Repeat with 5 additional molds. The isomalt is hot, so take care not to touch it. You may want to move the isomalt around in the mold to cover the sides as evenly as possible, but when it starts to cool, stop messing with it.
  4. Place the isomalt-filled molds into the freezer for about 5 minutes to set then remove them and gently peel the mold away from three of the isomalt half-balls.
  5. Place a packet of tea into each of the three isomalt half-balls still in the molds.
  6. Heat a plate in the microwave until it’s hot (about 1 minute), then turn one of the empty isomalt half-balls over and rub the flat edge onto the bottom of the skillet until it just starts to melt.
  7. Immediately place the heated half-ball on top of one of the filled tea bomb halves. The two sides will seal as the isomalt cools.
  8. To make your tea bombs into tea, just place them in a cup and pour hot water over them. Stir and enjoy! photo collage tutorial of how to make southern sweet tea bombs
