This Easy Kid-Made Kite is a Super Fun Afternoon Craft!
We are all about this little kid-made kite we made the other day. The kiddo can’t stop talking about it and she even hung it on her ceiling because she’s so proud!
Kid-Made Kite
Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, we adore playing with the kiddo. And having all this extra time to play and learn together lately has been kind of interesting and fun. While doing a little science lesson about wind resistance and how planes fly, we made this awesome DIY kite from a plastic bag that is so cool–and really flies!

Tips to Make this Easy Kite Craft
- You can use any trash bag, but if you want to draw on it, you probably want to stick with white. Because drawing on a black one is more difficult to see the colors. You can certainly use neon chalk paint pens on black plastic bag, but it’ll still be more difficult to see.
- When you’re coloring on your trash bag kite, keep in mind that a little too much pressure can quickly tear your plastic. So be gentle when you’re coloring.
- Be sure to use thin dowels for your structure. Too heavy and your kite will fall right out of the sky.
- Give yourself a LOT of string. I know it doesn’t look like it, but the kites really go way up high. So, don’t sell yourself short, give it a lot of string.
How Do I Make this Kid-Made Kite?
I’m so glad you asked. Below is our written tutorial.
Kid-Made Kite
This easy kid-made kite craft idea is so cool--I love the idea of making a homemade kite and the kiddo just loves it! We're definitely making another one for mom and then we're heading out to fly our kites this weekend again!
Materials
- 1 Trash Bag
- 2 Sticks or 1 Wooden Dowel
- Fishing Line
- Kite String
- Ribbon
Tools
- Scissors
- Sharpie-type Permanent Markers
Instructions
- Open the trash bag and cut off the drawstring or contoured top to make a straight edge.
- Cut down both sides and open it up to make the bag one long sheet.
- Cut one dowel to be 18-20 inches long and the other to be 25-28 inches long. Then lay the dowels perpendicular to each other to form a lowercase ‘t’ shape. The shorter cross bar should be placed off center of the taller dowel piece.
- Wrap the fishing line around the two dowels where they meet to secure them together. Wrap it multiple times to make a firm joint and tie it multiple times to ensure the knot won't give way.
- Trace a kite shape on the plastic bag, around the dowel cross shape. Cut the kite shape out.
- Fold each of the corners of the kite around the dowels, wrapping them around it and secure it in place with the fishing line.
- Flip the kite over and cut two small holes in about the location of the ‘x’ shapes shown in the photo.
- Loop fishing line through the holes in the plastic to the dowels to secure the plastic to the dowels further but also to provide a loose loop to secure your line to the ground.
- Tie the kite string to the center of the loop of fishing line you just tied to the kite.
- Tie a long tale of ribbon to the bottom dowel of the kite.
- Decorate with your permanent markers!
