Why These Christmas Jars Are a Perfect Holiday Craft Idea

From about October on, I get a few emails a day asking about the “best Christmas craft ideas” to sell or give as gifts. I think only you can decide, but these jars are usually on the list.

My number one reason these mason jar luminaries make my list is that this is a quick craft idea. The holidays are busy enough, so quick projects are my DIY happy place.

These mason jars are perfect for Christmas decor because you can adjust the ribbons, string, greenery, and accents to what you have on hand. Match your decor or highlight someone else’s when giving them.

These snowy jars make a perfect Christmas craft to sell, too. They bring in the passers-by and you can use up those ribbons, accents, and baubles left over from other projects.

Tips for Making a Snowy Mason Jar

  • Get the finest glitter you can find. It will easily stick to the spray adhesive and it’s easy to seal.
  • For a more rustic texture, mix 2 tablespoons of Epsom salts or artificial snow with the glitter. Spray a thick layer of adhesive and apply as directed below. I don’t recommend Epsom salts if you are storing these but they are good for a season or two.
  • If you do not have spray adhesive, you can substitute ModPodge, school glue (PVA), or tacky glue. Allow additional time for drying.
  • For a pop of color, add seasonal or artificial berries to the faux greenery on the front of the jar.
  • To avoid excess glitter falling off when the jar is handled, seal it with a layer of ModPodge or other glue that dries completely.
  • Use any jar, bottle, or other glass container to make these snowy jars. For a truly eclectic look, use a variety of sizes and shapes, and remember: recycling glass jars from your kitchen can look great!

What Glue to Use for Snowy Mason Jars

This is my favorite choice (and the absolute easiest glue) to use on these frosted jars. Remember to follow instructions and use the spray adhesive in a well-ventilated area. Coat the outside of a clean mason jar entirely.

With a pan or newspaper underneath, shake glitter onto the outside of the jar. Remove any excess by shaking the jar. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Apply a second coat if desired.
