Easy Macrame Gnome Ornament

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I’ve been sitting on the same package of cinnamon sticks for about a year. I despise tossing things, so I decided to make fun and easy package decorations or ornaments with them.

First up is this adorable macrame gnome ornament and I’ll give you the instructions for two sizes. The larger ones are perfect for the tree and the smaller make excellent handmade gift wrap accents.

Materials You Will Need

Below is what I used with a link to the macrame cord set I have. If you’re setting up a family craft night or a girl’s holiday craft session, this is perfect.

You’ll also need glue, scissors, and a brush or comb to fluff out the cord for the beard. Note: you can also just unfurl it but it will look much more textured.

How to Make Cinnamon Stick Gnome Ornaments

Below are the step by step instructions for these cuties. Keep this page open and follow along or print out for a crafting night session.

Cut 12, 12 inch strands of of 3 mm macrame cord in a natural color for the beard. Small cinnamon sticks will use 9 strands.

Cut 7, 16 inch strands of 3 mm macrame cord in any color for the hat. Small cinnamon sticks should use 5 strands. Cut an 8-10 inch cord to tie off the hat. If you want a long hanger, please cut a 24 inch cord for the center loop only.

Protect the surface, gather the natural cords together, and brush them out. Sometimes, it can help to unfurl the cord before brushing. Divide the cord into 3 sections and set aside.

Use the colored cord to create 7 lark’s head loops onto the cinnamon stick. Pull down the three center loops on the cinnamon stick and thread a natural cord bundle through each. There will be 2 loops unfilled on either side of the beard.

Identify the center most colored hat cord and tie it into a knot. Gather the bundle of colored hat cord and tie them together.

REMOVE the knotted hanging cord from the bunch and set it to the side. Unfurl and brush out the rest before trimming to size.

Glue on a nose at the base of the hat in the center of the beard. Trim the bear to the desired length.

Instructions

  1. Cut 12, 12 inch strands of of 3 mm macrame cord in a natural color for the beard. Small cinnamon sticks will use 9 strands.
  2. Cut 7, 16 inch strands of 3 mm macrame cord in any color for the hat. Small cinnamon sticks should use 5 strands. Cut 18-10 inch cord to tie off the hat. See note below.

Notes

Note: you can a longer cord for the center to increase the hanging cord for the hat.
