Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I have a lot of requests for ways to use faux fur. It adds a luxurious and cozy feel to anything we make or display.

Today, I’m sharing a fun way to use fur but also a way to add the cozy Christmas vibe to your decor without spending a lot of money (or time)!

Materials for This Winter Reindeer Project

Below are what I used and are in no way an exhaustive list. I think – if you’re anything like me – your well-stocked craft supplies have something that will work for these cuties.

  • foam round or ball (any size; mine were 4″ and 3″)
  • reindeer antlers (get these reindeer antlers if you can’t find them)
  • faux fur or minky fabric (look for minky blankets, too)
  • dowels (I used 12″)
  • wood rounds or birch rounds (I used wood round ornaments)
  • wooden wheels (see note below; you do not need these)

Note: if you don’t have the wooden wheels, you can drill holes into another wood round and secure each leg into that. If you’re anything like me, you have 3,155,003 wood rounds in your craft room and found them all when moving. ;)

How to Make Standing Reindeer for Christmas and Winter

If using a foam ball, cut it in half – look at you, you can now make two standing reindeer. If using the foam disc, move on.

For the larger reindeer, stack and glue three of the wood wheels together, ensuring they are lined up (I stuck a dowel in them to make sure). For the smaller reindeer, stack and glue two of the wood wheels together. Repeat until you have four sets of legs. Set aside to dry.

Cover the ball or disc in faux fur. I use an X-Acto knife to trim the fur and score only the backing to ensure I don’t cut through the pretty fur in the front. I cut each piece just larger than the item (see video for tips).

Note: I chose the smaller reindeer (made with the ball) to have the flat part of the body in front. He has a round reindeer booty…

Use scissors or an X-Acto to create holes through the fur and into the top of the foam for the antlers. Add glue and insert the antlers, holding in place until set.

Use the same method to add the legs on the bottom of each of the reindeer. Press them into place through the foam before adding glue, as you might need to adjust them to make the reindeer stable and not wobble about.

Chose a “face” style. For the smaller reindeer, I used a wood birch round and a small wood flat back (wood cabochon) painted red. For the larger reindeer, I glued a wood round and a birch round together.
