Tips to Make Ornaments from Felt
- Grab the Scandinavian ornament pattern set here. You can use any shape you want, of course, but these were the ones I used and they worked out well.
- I recommend only using premium felt, the thicker option of the two available at your typical craft store. The premium felt is going to be stiffer and also keep the paint from wicking through the fabric.
- Before you get crazy with the paint, do a quick sketch to make sure you like your design and that everything you want to fit will indeed fit on your shape.
- If your tube of paint is putting out too much paint at one time, you can use a dotting tool to paint the thick fabric paint in a more controlled manner.

How Do I Make this DIY Scandinavian Ornaments?
I’m so glad you asked. Below is our written tutorial.
DIY Scandinavian Ornaments
You can make a bunch of these beautiful DIY Scandinavian ornaments in just a few minutes and with minimal supplies. One of the best DIY Christmas crafts ever.
Materials
- Premium Felt Sheets – Red and White
- Dimensional Fabric Paint – I used Slick Red and Slick White
- Chipboard or Poster Board, optional
- Ribbons – Red and White
- Ornament Patterns
Tools
- Scissors
- Paper Towels
- Toothpicks
- Marker or Chalk Pencil
- Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Instructions
- Download, print and cut out Ornament patterns. If you want to make a lot of ornaments, I recommend that you trace the patterns onto chipboard and cut them out for sturdiness.
- Trace the pattern shapes onto red and white felt with the marker, and then cut out.
- Practice drawing thin lines on the paper towel, squeezing the paint bottle to get an even flow and push out the bubbles.
- Using your sketch or my photos as a guide, add the faux embroidery stitching with the fabric paint. Use red paint on white felt and white paint on red felt to make it stand out. When done with an ornament, set it aside to dry completely.
- When the ornaments are dry, cut an 8-inch length of coordinating ribbon for each ornament. Knot the ends of each ribbon together to create ribbon loop. Attach a ribbon loop to the top center back of each ornament for a hanger.
