Elegant Moss Witch Hat Topiary for Fall

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I’m a “plant girl.” They’re everywhere in my house and well, you should see the backyard. That said, I’m always looking for a way to use natural elements in my decorating.

While attempting to clean cleaning my craft room, I came across a bag of opened moss sheets and knew I had to use them up. First, I made a large DIY mossy witch hat and then I made this little version for the mantle to take me from fall through Halloween.

How to Make a Moss Witch Hat Topiary

Keep this page open and follow along or scroll down for a printable version.

First, remove the tinsel from the hat or prepare the hat form. Alternative ideas from the dollar store include the mini traffic cones (round the base’s corners) or the floral foam cones (cut a circle out of cardboard and cover for a brim).

Remove the sheet moss from the paper backing in as large of pieces as you can. It will work if you have dried out sheet moss (that’s what I used).

Next, use a generous amount of hot glue and press the sheet moss onto the witch hat form. The form will also “grab” the moss, but be sure to press it into the glue.

Once the top and brim of the hat are covered, flip over the hat and coat the bottom in moss, as well. This will hide all of the plastic witch hat form.

You can glue in the dowel to the hat now or break off a small piece of floral foam and glue it in. I did the latter because I wanted to easily remove the dowel to place the hat atop a pumpkin in future years and I also added a bit of Spanish moss to hide the foam.

Press a piece of floral foam into the clay pot. Press the dowel into the center of the foam.

Cut a piece of sheet moss into a circle that roughly fits the clay pot. Make a slit in the center so the dowel can slide through and then glue it down to the foam.

Press the dowel into the clay pot’s foam (you can glue it in or not) and cover the sheet moss with a light dusting of Spanish moss. I also added a small pumpkin from a Dollar Tree floral pick.

Decorate the mossy witch hat topiary with a bit of raffia and display your new elegant Halloween decor.
