Pretend Makeup
Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I am a sucker for dressu-p and pretend play. If it’s dressing up as Princess Anna and hunting for trolls to fix our frozen heart, or flying through the forest to catch up to Peter when we’re playing Tinkerbell, we seriously can’t get enough of pretend play in our house.
This pretend makeup is the finishing touch our little princesses need for their dress up and pretend play dates! It’s so easy you can actually make up a few sets and gift them to friends. Let’s get started.

Tips to Make Dress-up Makeup
Before you DIY your own pretend makeup, read through these tips and tricks.
- Put all your makeup inside a pretty bag and add a couple of fluffy makeup brushes to complete the set! I picked up sets in the Amazon warehouse for only a couple of dollars.
- Don’t forget to make sure that the lipstick is completely dried before pretend play time. Otherwise, this is real lipstick. LOL!
- If you don’t have an empty makeup container handy, you can snag one on Amazon or just pick up some cheap makeup at the dollar store, crack. it, and clean it out.
- If your nail polish is old and gummy, you can boil a little water, remove from the heat, then place your unopened bottle in the water for a few minutes. This should get it to liquify again.
How Do I Make this Pretend Makeup?
I’m so glad you asked. Below is our written tutorial and if you have any questions, please use the comments section below.
Pretend Makeup for Dressup and Pretend Play
Materials
- Empty makeup palettes
- Lipstick container
- Nail polish (multiple colors, we used pink blue green and light green)
- Crayola Model Magic (we used red and white to make pink)
Tools
- strong glue or glue gun
- craft sticks
Instructions
- Grab your old, empty, or broken makeup. I didn’t happen to have any on hand that I was willing to part with, but at the dollar store, I spent $5 on a cute makeup bag, 2 makeup palettes, a makeup brush, and a lipstick. I had plenty of nail polish on hand already, but if you don’t, pick up a couple of colors.
- Wedge or clean the old makeup out of the pallettes. You can use a skewer or a craft stick.
- Wash each palette with soap and water, then dry them out well.
- Choose what colors you want your pretend makeup to be based on your nail polish choices,
- Carefully fill each section with your choice of nail polish color. Fill it all the way to the edge. Allow it to dry a place it will not be touched for 24-48 hours.
- While the nail polish dries, roll your old lipstick all the way out of the tube and cut it off as close to the bottom as possible.
- Clean the remaining lipstick out of the tube with a craft stick. Wash the lipstick container with soap and water to remove all residue and allow it dry.
- With a piece of model magic about the size of your thumb, mix the colors (if desired), and roll it into the approximate size of a of lipstick.
- Fit your model magic inside the empty lipstick tube to see if it fits. Reshape and remold it until it does.
- When the model magic fits like lipstick into the tube, cut off the top at an angle with a craft stick and smooth any edges to shape it like lipstick.
- Once you are happy with your shape, width, and length, allow the model magic to dry for 24-48 hours. Note, model magic does not completely harden, it just becomes a little more firm.
- When the lipstick is dry, glue it to the bottom of the lipstick container.
