Tips for Making a Holiday Charcuterie Board

  • We outlined our candy cane shape with fresh raspberries. If this fruit is not available in your area, use fresh cranberries which are seasonal for this time of year virtually everywhere.
  • Have a mix of flavor profiles, like a sweet to balance the saltiness of the cured meats and cheese. Add bitter dark chocolate or Arbequina olives to pair with the fruits or jams.
  • Other olive choices include Thassos olives from Greece, Giant Green Olives, or the Spanish Manzanilla and Gordal. In our house, we LOVE the garlic and jalapeño stuffed olives (not too spicy).

Using an edible marker, make a candy cane shape on the board or plate. Create cheese and tomato skewers using fresh Mozzarella pearls and fontina cheese along with the baby tomatoes. Arrange them along the candy cane layout on the board or plate.

Using kitchen scissors, snip off the long ends of the skewers, if desired. I’ve left them on before (great for guests), but it does make less of a visual impact.

Lastly, stack the crackers and add a ramekin or a small bowl of jelly. Always add a few chocolates to the board (Hershey’s Kisses are a great pre-wrapped option). Be sure to add some food picks or mini forks near the display for guests.

Notes for Making a Charcuterie Board for Christmas

  • During the holidays, a variety of fresh herbs and berries are available for additional decoration. Add a few sprigs of rosemary or peppermint leaves to a seasonal dish like this Christmas charcuterie idea.
  • Check out the candy section of your local grocery store and look for seasonal candies. A peppermint with milk chocolate would pair beautifully with this charcuterie board.
  • Instead of (or in addition to) the olives, a variety of nuts is a good option and taste great along with meats and cheeses. They even go well with chocolate and fruit. We left them off this Christmas appetizer due to allergies.
