Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, we truly love the Grinch Who Stole Christmas movies. The kiddo finds some excuse to watch it a lot during the holiday season, in every version that’s ever been produced. And even not during the holiday season, she loves a good Grinch movie night. So we often find ourselves watching the green guy and adding a fun craft to it to extend our fun.

Tips to Make A Painted Rock Grinch

  • I like to start by looking for rocks outside but, if you do that, be sure not to remove any from a park or other protected natural areas. Start by looking in your own yard, where you can be fairly certain the owner won’t get upset. If you just can’t find the best rocks, I love the awesome rocks ready for painting here or find some at a local hardware store, or even at a local landscaping company. However, I don’t bother with the rocks you find at your typical craft store. They often are made with a coating hat will keep the paint from sticking.
  • Before doing any painting, make sure your rocks are super clean and very dry. The paint will not stick on a wet rock and can flake off if the rock is dirty. But, what does stick? Pencil. So you can sketch your design onto the rock while you wait for it to dry.
  • I prefer to use acrylic paints, just personally, but you can also use paint pens/markers like these here, artist pens, gelly roll pens, markers, highlighters, etc. But, one reason I like acrylic paints is that some of these other methods can require a second coat if you want really opaque colors. So just be aware of that.
  • After your painting is done, take a few minutes to seal the rocks. Whether you decide to use a spray sealant or your more typical craft sealant like Mod Podge, putting a good sealing on your rocks is going to keep your rock art from washing off in the rain or fading in the sun.
