Valentines Dollar Tree Gnome

Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, we have nothing to hide about this obsession with gnomes. It’s gotten to be such a big thing, I try to make at least one gnome a week, if not two or more. For gifts, for decor, or just for the therapy of creating, it’s one of my favorite ways to decompress. And challenging myself to make a themed gnome using only Dollar Tree materials?! That’s a fun way I’ve come up with to mix-up my normal gnome pattern planning activities.

Tips to Make Dollar Tree Gnome with a Twisty Hat

  • Finding faux fur at the dollar store is kind of a tough thing sometimes, depending on stock. Which I have a notoriously understocked store, so I have to get creative. I’ve used mop heads, fluffy pillows and, now, a tiny teddy bear. I know! Horrible for the teddy bear, but the gnome just really needed a beard, so sacrifices had to be made.
  • The trick to the twist in this hat: we’re not going to cut the sock off. I haven’t seen anyone else doing this, so I hope it’s as fun to you as it seems to me. Because this is, in a word: FUN! So, don’t knot the sock when you’re stuffing it – ready through the instructions and check out what makes this easy Valentine no-sew gnome so special.
  • Let’s talk about variations on this Dollar Tree gnome with a twisty hat., because there’s SO MUCH potential. I see the supplies for this easy gnome in pretty much every holiday decor line that Dollar Tree puts on the shelf – even in my poorly-stocked store. So, think about making your hat removable (don’t hot glue it down) so you can swap it out, or plan on making more of these gnomes for each holiday!

Materials

  • 1 Long, White Men's Sock
  • 1 Valentine-Themed Infinity Scarf
  • Scraps Black Fluffy Sock
  • Weighted Filler (I used poly beads, but you can use the little rocks from Dollar Tree)
  • Polyfill (I used polyfill from a Dollar Tree pillow)
  • White Small Teddy Bear
  • Scraps Red Felt
  • Scraps Green Felt
  • Blush and Applicator
  • 1 Chenille Wire

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue

Instructions

  1. Fill the gnome: Fill the toe of the white sock with the poly beads. Stuff polyfill into the white sock on top of the polybeads, adding the stuffing all the way up to the opening of the sock. Do not cut the sock. Toward the opening of the sock, you will need less polyfill, reducing the amount of polyfill as you go in small increments. Roll the polyfill-filled sock between your hands to smooth the transition from full fill at the toe to almost-no-fill at the opening of the sock.
  2. Shape the head: About halfway up the sock, begin pinching the sock fabric together vertically, hot gluing the pinched strips into the sock, pinching the sock tighter and tighter as you work your way up to the sock opening. The goal is to make a cone shape with the sock. Trim away any sock material at the top that is in the way of making a neat, narrow tip. Slide the chenille wire into the top of the cone-shaped sock and hot glue it in place. Hot glue the tip of the sock closed, completing and closing the cone shape of the hat.
  3. Make the nose: Pinch a bit of the sock and polyfill between your thumb and forefinger then tie-off this pinched up area to make a nose. Dust the nose with a little blush.
  4. Give the gnome a beard: Cut a beard shape from the back of the teddy bear. You need as much faux fur as you can get, but neatly trim the faux fur into a wide rectangle shape or U shape. Hot glue this on below the nose. Cut off the arms of the teddy bear and hot glue the open ends closed. Hot glue each arm one either side of the nose, forming a mustache.
  5. Cut out the hat: Lay the scarf on the table, folded in half. Lay the gnome on top and, using the width of the gnome, identify how high and how wide you will need your hat to be, adding about 1/2-inch for a hem allowance. Cut this triangle shape out of both layers of the scarf. photo collage tutorial of how to make a dollar tree gnome for valentines
  6. Assemble the hat: Hot glue the sides of the two pieces of scarf together, then turn right side out. Hem the edge of the hat brim, to finish the hat. Tuck the hat over the top of the gnome, pulling it down low over the nose and hot glue this in place.
  7. Add a rose: Cut a small circle of red felt, about the size of your palm. Cut a 1/2-inch wide spiral in the felt, all the way to the center. Starting in the center of the spiral, roll the felt into a rose shape, trimming it when you've made it as large as you like and hot gluing it in this shape. Hot glue the rose onto the front of the hat. Cut two leaf shapes from the green felt and pinch them in the center to create a little more natural leaf shape. Hot glue the two leaves to the back of the rose.
  8. Give him some feet: Cut the scraps of your black sock into two 2-inch by 3-inch sections. Place a small amount of polyfill in the center of one black sock section, then fold the edges of the fabric over the polyfill and hot glue them into a round shape to form a shoe. Repeat with the second rectangle piece of sock. Hot glue the two shoes to the bottom front of the gnome. Then enjoy! photo collage tutorial of how to make a dollar tree valentines gnome
