Tips for Making These Gnomes

  • The patterns used for this set of gnomes are: the free traditional gnome pattern and the Scandinavian Sweeties gnome pattern.
  • Using felt or fleece will give you a gorgeous, high-end looking gnome. I recommend felt (or fleece) for the body and fleece for the hat because fleece has a bit more stretch to it than felt.
  • If you use wood balls instead of wooden beads, you do not have to worry about the hole. That said, you can use pom poms, felted wool balls, or nylon stuffed with fill for the gnome noses.
  • Keep the bouquet (or other items) small to be able to position the gnomes into a heart when facing each other.
  • Note: this set can be made into year-round or holiday gnomes. Customize the colors and accessories for any decor, season, or event.

Valentine's Day Gnome Couple

This Valentine's Day gnome couple will steal your hearts with their easy gnome patterns and sweet accessories. Use felt, fleece, or a mix of both like I did to create one of a kind DIY gnomes.

Active Time 40 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $10

Materials

  • 2 premium felt craft sheets (one for each gnome, body color)
  • 2 10 x 10 inch fleece scraps (one for each gnome, hat color)
  • scrap fleece (for mitten color)
  • wood rounds for noses (1 inch and 3/4 inch)
  • 2 scraps Mongolian fleece in white (mine are 1.5" W x 3" L)
  • bendable floral wire
  • poly pellets
  • poly fill
  • optional, small flowers on wire and ribbon (bouquet)
  • optional, felt and embroidery thread (envelope)

Tools

  • glue gun and/or sewing machine (can use either or both)
  • scissors
  • optional, embroidery needle

Instructions

  1. Cut the body and base from the free traditional gnome pattern. Cut the hat, arms, and mittens from the Scandinavian Sweeties pattern.
  2. Put the felt right-sides together and sew or glue the body pieces along the long edge, leaving bottom and top open. Attach the base (right-side facing in). Pull on seams to ensure solid connection. Turn right-sides out.
  3. Sew or glue the hat's long edge, the arms along the long edge, and the outside edge of the mittens. Turn all pieces right-sides out.
  4. Use 1/2 cup of poly pellets per gnome body and fill the rest of the body with poly fill, leaving about 1/2 inch open at the top.
  5. Put the arms into the mittens (no stuffing or wire) and glue or sew to secure. Pin the arms to the body as a placeholder.step by step six image horizontal collage showing fill, stuff, and assemble steps of how to make a gnome
  6. For the boy gnome, attach the beard and place the nose join point just above the top of the beard so the wood round hangs over the fur. Stuff some poly fill into the hat and slip onto the gnome.
  7. For the girl gnome, attach the fur and split it in the middle. Add the 3/4 inch wood round just under the fur so that when you slip on the hat, it will look like pigtails.
  8. Measure a length of wire which extends from the tip of the hat to the base of the body and add 1 inch. Fold each end over and run the wire up the hat, gluing to the back seam. Slide the entire piece onto the body, turning down the wire at the base.
  9. Glue on the arms and hat all the way around the gnome. For the boy gnome, glue the mittens together. Combine three flowers by twisting the stems and covering that in 1/8th inch ribbon. Slip it between his arms.
  10. For the girl gnome, create an envelope by cutting a 2 x 3 inch piece of white felt. Round the top edges off, fold up one inch and down 1/2 inch. Clip in place and sew a border in embroidery thread. Glue it to the inside of the girl gnome's mittens.

More Accessory Ideas for Valentine Gnomes

As I was writing up this tutorial, I came up with more ideas for accessories for the gnomes and well, I couldn’t resist. I just ran to my craft room and whipped up these three gnome accessories for your Valentine’ Day cuties.

  • An easy accessory you could make is a heart-shaped felt balloon on a string (wire). To make this, cut two heart shapes from felt, leaving an opening at the bottom. Stuff and add a bit of floral wire before sealing.
  • How about a mini box of chocolates for one of them to gift? To make this cut two heart shapes and one long, thin rectangle shape from felt. Glue the rectangle along the outer edge of one heart. Once secure, add the other heart on top.
  • Everyone loves jewelry, so a ring box and shiny adornment would be perfect for this pair. To make, use card stock to make a simple box (one rectangle attached to the outside of a square). Glue the two pieces together before adding a hinged lid (a rectangle folded at the back of the square. Inside, add a small piece of fabric and a jump ring with a rhinestone glued to it.
