Cravings. When the weather gets warm, I have a hankering for a sweet and sour drink from my teen years: Sonic Drive-In’s strawberry limeade.

I knew my strawberry lemonade concentrate would work (just with limes), but I wanted to try making a strawberry syrup. The results were absolutely amazing!

Ingredients for this Sonic Copycat Recipe

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and quartered
  • 4 cups water
  • Juice of 1 lime (large) or 2 limes (small), plus more for garnish
  • 1 – 1.5 cups granulated sugar (depends on the sweetness of your berries)
  • Optional, crushed ice, mint garnish

This Sonic strawberry limeade copycat recipe will knock your strawberry socks off! It's quick to come together and the syrup stores for weeks. Let's get started making this drool-worthy, thirst-quenching strawberry limeade.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, and quartered
  • 4 cups water
  • Juice of 1 lime (large) or 2 limes (small), plus more for garnish
  • 1 - 1.5 cups granulated sugar (depends on the sweetness of your berries)
  • Optional, crushed ice, mint garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the washed, hulled, and sliced strawberries into a saucepan with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 15-18 minutes, uncovered.
  2. Remove the strawberries (it's okay that they'll look kind of gross) and discard. Skim anything from the red water. This is the base of our syrup, so make sure it's free from leaves or strawberry pieces and skim off the bubbles and foam at the top.
  3. Add the sugar to the strawberry juice and stir until dissolved (about 5-8 minutes).

Turn it Into a Strawberry Limeade Mojito

Strawberry. Limeade. Mojito.

Doesn’t that sound like a wonderful drink to serve at a BBQ? Refreshing, sweet, and with just a smidge of a kick, it will steal the show.

To make the mojito, follow all the steps above and add a bit of crushed mint to taste. We use our mortar and pestle, but a spoon on a wood cutting board works well in a pinch.

You can chill glasses or serve them chock-full of ice. Add in the strawberry limeade syrup, 2 oz of light rum, some soda water, and a bit of the crushed mint. Garnish with a sliced strawberry, lime, and/or mint sprig.

Hello, lovely.

Other Ways to Use the Simple Strawberry Syrup

In our house, this disappears rather quickly. A few ways we like to use it are:

  • milkshakes (vanilla ice cream + this syrup = oooooh my goodness good).
  • added to plain Greek yogurt to lightly sweeten.
  • strawberry milk (one of my daughter’s favorites).
  • added to iced tea (unsweetened).
