Tips to Make Decoupage Mason Jars

  • To make sure the paint won’t chip or scratch on painted mason jars, you coat it in mod podge like this, right? Well, that’s what gave me this idea of decoupaging these napkins on and AREN’T THEY EPIC?! So, anyway–the mod podge is the key for getting the napkins onto the jars with a nice clear coat.
  • Speaking of the napkins I used…you can grab a set here. They are double sided, so you can actually use them for more fun projects like coasters or anything. So cool. And they are rainbow cows–who doesn’t love that?!
  • What can you do with decorated mason jars? Well, first, you can put them on your mantle with an electric tea light in them or you can use them as pencil and pen cups. You can put them on a bookshelf with fairy lights in them. Anything is possible.

Total Time 15 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $3

Materials

  • Rainbow Cow Napkins
  • 1 Mason Jar
  • Mod Podge
  • White Acrylic Paint (optional, but makes the colors pop)

Tools

  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors, optional

Instructions

  1. Make sure your mason jar is clean before beginning. If you want the colors on your napkins to really pop, paint it white on the exterior and allow the paint to dry completely. If you do not care, skip the white paint and move to step 2.
  2. Pinch the napkin between two fingers and tear along the outer edge of the drawing of the cow, giving the edge a feathered look and removing the excess napkin area.
  3. Apply a layer of ModPodge over the entire mason jar where your napkin will cover.
  4. Separate the napkin layers and then place one cow from the rainbow cow napkin on top of the layer of ModPodge while it is still wet. Be careful when placing it because the napkin is thin and will tear if you try to move it once placed. If desired, place a second napkin layer on the other side of the mason jar.
  5. Apply a second coat of ModPodge over the top of the napkin, taking care to be gentle so as not to tear it. Allow the ModPodge to dry completely then enjoy! photo collage of how to make a farmhouse mason jar with a decoupaged napkin
