Elise’s former nanny (and now one of our family’s best friends) was celebrating a milestone birthday (40!), and the 3 year old could tell from our discussions that this was a big day for her. She asked me if we could make something for her best gal pal and when we brainstormed, the little one was particular: it had to be popcorn.

Ummm, okay… I think my kiddo inherited my love of popcorn.

Simple Gifts from Kids Popcorn Seasoning Gift Set

Before I left Texas, I would go to a swanky, adults-only movie theater. It was over the top posh and pretentious, but totally perfect when you’re in your twenties and don’t have a care in the world. Or you don’t want to sit through a movie with tweens who’ve sneaked in and spend the entire time giggling because the hot lead actor said a ‘dirty word.’

Ugh. But we’ve all done it.

Anyway, at this swanky theater, they had a plethora of toppings you could choose from to ‘dress your own corn.’ Although I was partial to garlic butter, I made my way through almost all the delicious popcorn recipes they had and surprisingly found a few combinations I never would have thought would be tasty (cheesy jalepeno, for one). I gave Elise a list of flavorings to choose from, and she chose the following kid-friendly toppers for her popcorn recipes and gift set.

Why This Activity Is Important

We decided on making two popcorn flavorings for our friend because we love her, but this activity was helpful for our daughter as well. This was a gift that:

  • the 3 year old could make herself, boosting her developing confidence,
  • got the kid into the kitchen, allowing her to make choices while considering others’ likes, and
  • allowed the little one to explore math – she thinks measuring is so much fun!

To make either of these popcorn recipe mixes, just dump the ingredients into a small bowl and stir to combine. This was really fun for Elise who even tasted the product after stirring! See the ‘ouches’ on her nose? That was from weeks ago when she tumbled down the last two steps at a friend’s house… Good times (not).

Mexican Chocolate Popcorn Recipe

This is by far the 3 year old’s favorite topping, second only to the FROZEN version where we pour liquid candy on the corn. Go figure.

  • 2 tbsp high quality cocoa powder
  • 4 tsp powdered sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

To serve, butter popcorn lightly and sprinkle the flavoring to your liking or make it part of a popcorn recipes and gift set for a friend or neighbor.

Nutritional Yeast “Cheesy” Garlic Popcorn Flavoring

Have you heard of nutritional yeast? It’s become one of our favorite popcorn toppings because it has a substantial cheese-like flavor (but better)!

  • 2.5 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

To serve, butter popcorn lightly and sprinkle the flavoring to your liking.

To gift them, we put each mix in a 4 inch tea bag (these are seriously the best things ever!) and secured it with a sticker Elise chose from her VAST Hello Kitty sticker collection (tea bags are an affiliate link). We used a ribbon to tie the pouches to a box filled with popcorn kernels.

Isn’t this just the sweetest little kid-made gift ? We all love getting hand-drawn pictures of monster-princess-alien-flower-like things, but getting something fun and tasty can’t be beat! This popcorn and seasonings gift set would look great pinned to a gift or kid’s activities board you have on Pinterest!

We use the “Cheesy” blend in our house when we have a family movie night. Just before we left on our last vacation, the little one asked for chocolate popcorn, so it might be making an appearance again soon.
