Tips to Make Clay Toadstools

  • If you feel like there’s a lot of fingerprints in your clay, you can brush it with a paintbrush. Still not smooth enough? Try dabbing a little rubbing alcohol on your paintbrush before going over your mushroom caps. That will clear up those fingerprints fast!
  • Want a shiny finish? Easy! Just use a glossy craft sealant like Mod Podge on your finished polymer clay mushrooms, after they’ve cooled off, of course. You can do one coat of apply a second, if you want a spectacularly glossy finish, just be sure to let the sealant dry completely between coats.
  • I have to be honest, making the tiny white dots on the eyes caused me some consternation. I finally settled on using a toothpick instead of a paintbrush. The paintbrush was just too much. And a pin was too little. A toothpick, though, applied just the right sized-dot for an eye-shimmer for me!
  • Definitely give yourself some colorful polymer clay options by grabbing something like this sampler pack here. Of course you can make these clay toadstools with any polymer clay but I like this brand because the colors remain bright after baking and it’s super easy to work.
  • When you’re assembling your mushrooms, I recommend using a strong super glue like this because it’s going to hold the pieces together well and is less likely to react with the clay long-term.

So fun, but really simple, you can make a pot-full of these polymer clay mushrooms in just a few mintues. I love them so much!

Active Time 15 minutes
Additional Time 25 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $2

Materials

  • Polymer clay in dark brown, tan, and light brown
  • Pot, optional
  • Decorative rocks, optional

Tools

  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet
  • Clay cutting and piercing tools
  • Sharpie
  • Glue
  • White paint
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush

Instructions

  1. Roll out 3 dime-sized balls of brown clay.  Press these brown balls out into flat, circular shapes with a peaked center by pinching the edges a bit, leaving the middle thicker. Perfection is not the goal - organic mushroom caps are more fun than perfect circles.
  2. Roll out 12-15 balls of tan clay about ½ cm in diameter then press them into flat circles.
  3. Press theses tiny flat circles into the tops of the mushroom caps using a forming tool or your thumb - you can also just use a pencil eraser, just something smooth and small to help you press it on top and work it in without messing up your mushroom cap's overall shape.
  4. Roll out 3 balls of tan clay about 2-3 cm in diameter. Roll these tan balls into long cylinders, tapered on one end. These do not need to be perfectly straight, but straight-ish is nice.
  5. Roll out some black clay into 6 very tiny balls for eyes, flattening them just a smidge, if you're making your mushrooms have eyes like mine.
  6. Place all of the clay creations onto parchment paper and bake the clay in the oven per the package directions (usually 20-25 minutes). Remove the clay creations from the oven and allow to cool completely.
  7. Glue on the eyes about 1 to 1 1/2 inch from the top of the tapered end of the cylinders. Using a fine-tipped permanent marker, draw a smile onto each the stems under the eyes then paint white dots on one side of each eye for a "shine".
  8. Glue the tops onto the tapered end of each mushroom stem and seal your mushrooms with Mod Podge and allow this to dry completely. photo collage tutorial of how to make a polymer clay mushroom
