Valentine Felt Gnomes
Here at Ruffles and Rain Boots, I love, love, love decorating for Valentine’s Day! Pinks and reds take over the blues and grays of the New Year. Hearts appear EVERYWHERE and diets are foiled by easy access to scores of candy. ;)
I’m sharing these adorable Valentine felt gnomes I made while munching on said candy. These felt gnomes are a super-simple DIY gnome for any age, however, I recommend younger kids (and the accident-prone adults like myself) use a low-temp glue gun.

Tips for Valentine’s Day Gnomes
Below, you’ll find the step-by-step tutorial for felt gnomes perfect for Valentine’s Day. But before we get started, let’s chat about some tips I have for you.
- I used Merino wool (here on Amazon) but other options for gnome beards and gnome braids are:
- craft fur (available here on Amazon or at craft stores like JoAnn’s, Michael’s, etc.),
- high-quality furs like Mongolian (available here on Amazon or at fabric stores), and
- yarn – be sure you’re choosing a thick yarn you can brush out if you want the same look.
- Any pre-made cone will work, however, I recommend paper machĂ© cones like these. The material is better for the environment than other options and they’re hollow. This makes them perfect for any gnome craft you’d like to make like ornaments, toppers, or decor pieces. And they stack for easy storage!
- I color the wool in this tutorial. If you have any questions after watching the video, just let me know in the comments below. Practice on a scrap piece of wool or fur.

Valentine's Day Felt Gnomes
These adorable Valentine felt gnomes are a quick craft for the sweetest holiday. Grab some basic craft supplies and let's get started with these fun DIY gnomes.
Materials
Felt Gnome Supplies (clickable links)
- 2, 4-inch paper maché cones
- wool, craft fur, or quality fur
- felt (I used 1 sheet of pink, 1 light gray, and 1 dark gray)
- 2 gnome noses (clay ball, wood bead, pompom)
- optional, watercolor brush pen to color beard and braids
Tools
- glue gun and sticks
- scissors
Instructions
- Measure the height of your cone (you can make any size) and cut out a triangle shape which fits around the entire paper cone (with a small overlap). Hot glue the felt to the cone to cover.
- Cut the overlap section into small pieces and hot glue under the bottom of the cone.
- Measure how tall you'd like your hat to be and where you would like it to fall on the "face" of the cone. Cut it out and secure the cone hat with glue but do not attach it to the cone.
- Create your braids or beard and affix them to the cone, allowing still for a nose to be slightly pushed up under the hat. Glue on the nose after positioning the hat (but do not glue on until the nose is in position).
- Cut and attach any extra pieces and glue on the gnome hats.

I’m not seeing how to make the braids. Am I missing it somewhere?
It’s in the article but here’s a summary: use Merino wool (or wool roving), separate out into 6 equal(ish) thick strands, and then braid three together. You can color them like the beard (using a water based marker).
I love all these gnomes! Thank you for sharing the how-to’s! What kind of felt do you use? I want to use something that is good quality.
At Joann’s there are three versions of felt: craft felt (thin sheets), premium (thicker sheets), and bolt felt. Some of the bolt felt is thin, other thick. In my opinion, the thicker felt (either in the sheets or on the bolt) is always the better option. It just looks nicer and you can definitely tell a difference in the quality when you pick them up.
Have fun crafting these – these are some of my favorites.
I love all your gnomes, but these 2 are SOOOOO cute!
