Kitchen Science – Ocean Craft for Kids

Kitchen science helps pave the way for young minds to develop an inquisitive nature and critical thinking. Oil and water experiments enthrall kids and I decided to set up a quick calming ocean craft before we started our Moana movie night.

You know that oil doesn’t mix with water and teaching kids about it is so much fun! This is a great discussion to have with kids on a Moana movie night because the ocean steals the show in some parts of the movie.

Supplies for Calming Ocean Craft

You won’t have to trek the little ones to store to set up this project. Any container, preferably plastic for younger ones, will work. Just make sure it’s pretty clear so they can see the separation and the floating items.

  • Container with a secure lid (we use inexpensive plastic tubes – great for all kinds of crafts)
  • Oil (vegetable oil works)
  • Water
  • Blue food coloring
  • Beads, googly eyes, sequins, or foam cutouts of ocean life

Instructions for an Ocean Craft for Kids

Fill 1/3 of the container with oil. Add food coloring (1 drop for light blue, 2 for dark).

Fill up the rest of the container with water.

Add in accessories and secure the lid. Note: we ended up gluing ours to reduce the chance of the container opening.

That’s it. See why it’s perfect for a Moana movie night?! It’s quick, easy to set up, and a no-mess craft! If you have a Moana birthday party, this party favor doubles as an activity without breaking the bank.
