I absolutely love making quick and fun farmhouse gnomes and this mushroom cap gnome is perfectly perfect for just that. So cute, I had to make two mushroom gnomes!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Active Time 20 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $5

Materials

  • No-Sew Gnome Pattern - Make the Body, Arms and Beard
  • 1/8 yard White Craft Felt
  • 1/8 yard Contrasting Color Craft Felt (I used red and beige)
  • Small Amount of Polyfill
  • Small Amount of Rocks (or Polyfill Beads)
  • White Faux Fur (I like long-pile)
  • 1 Large Wood Bead
  • 2 Small Wood Beads

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue
  • Funnel, optional
  • Needle & Black Thread, if desired (that's what I used)
  • Black Fine-Point Marker, if desired
  • Pins or Clips

Instructions

  1. Cut out the gnome body shape out of the white felt, as well as two arm shapes in the contrast color.
  2. Fold the gnome body shape in half and run a hem along the open side with your hot glue or your sewing machine.
  3. Fold the flap of the gnome body shape over and close the bottom of the gnome with hot glue or a seam. Allow glue to dry fully.
  4. Turn the body of the gnome right side out.
  5. Fill the gnome body with rocks. If the rocks are visible, you can make a little pouch to place them in before you place them in the gnome body.
  6. Tuck a small portion of polyfill into the top of the gnome body to give it a softer shape.
  7. Cut a 7-inch circle from the contrasting color felt and a 6-inch circle from the white color felt.
  8. Fold the white felt circle in quarters, then cut the point created by the fold about 1/2 inch wide. This will give you a hole just wide enough in the center of your mushroom cap to fit your gnome's body top!
  9. Cut the contrasting color circle of felt from the edge through to the center. Then overlap the edges about 1/4 inch at the bottom, creating a slight cone for the top of the mushroom.
  10. Align the two circles on the outside edge and pin them together with 4 pins equidistant apart.
  11. Glue along the outside edge of the two circles, creating a hem between them. At first, only glue between the pins, then remove each pin and glue the fabric together where the pins were.
  12. Fill the hat a little with a small amount of polyfill, making it as puffy or as gently curved as you desire.
  13. Add gills by hand sewing lines into the center of the cap out to the edges all the way around the mushroom. Alternatively, you can draw gills on with the fine-tipped marker.
  14. Cut out the beard shape from the craft fur by turning the fur over and cutting only the fabric with the exacto knife.photo collage of how to make a mushroom gnome
  15. Hot glue the beard to the body, about 2 inches below the edge of the gnome body.
  16. Hot glue the nose in place about 1-inch below the top of the beard.
  17. Place the hat on top of the gnome's head, tucking it down just above the top of the nose.
  18. Hot glue the hat in place in the back and sides, then one little dot above the nose.
  19. Make the arms by placing a line of hot glue down one long side of the arm shapes and then fold the fabric over onto itself to make the arm.
  20. Slip the arm up into the hat on the side and hot glue it in place.
  21. Hot glue the hands in place on the ends of the arms.
  22. Cut out and glue organic oval shapes to the top of hat for spots as well as a little wooden tag if you have one and enjoy! photo collage of how to make a mushroom cap gnome
