Tips to Make This Christmas Craft for Kids

  • Grab these tiny 2-inch terra cotta pots like these. I made a few different ornaments using these little pots, so you can buy a whole set and know that there are a ton of more fun crafts you can make with the kiddos with the same supplies.
  • I have decided that these little Mickey and Minnie ornaments don’t have to be an ‘only for Christmas” craft. They are absolutely perfect for Christmas ornaments, sure, but they would also make fun elements for a garland, door hanger or a fun little addition to your desk decor.
  • If you want your Mickey and Minnie Mouse Christmas ornaments to last for a long time and not get covered in scratches when they’re being handled, I recommend taking a few minutes to seal your ornaments with a coat of mod podge after you’re finished painting.

Materials

  • 2 - 1-inch Terra Cotta Pots
  • 2 - ½ inch Yellow Buttons
  • Red Acrylic Paint
  • White Acrylic Paint
  • Black Acrylic Paint
  • ÂĽ-inch Red Ribbon
  • 2 Wire Ornament Hangers
  • Black Craft Foam
  • Small amount of embroidery thread

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Painter’s Tape

Instructions

  1. Make a bow for the Minnie ornament by tying the red ribbon into a very small bow about 1 inch wide. Set aside.
  2. Draw four 3/4-inch circles on the black craft foam (I used the bottom of of my acrylic paint bottle as a guide) then cut them out and set aside.
  3. Using the painter's tape, cover the bottom half of your pots.
  4. Thread a bell onto a 3-inch length of string then thread the two ends through the pot on the inside, through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Tie the ends to the ornament hanger and hot glue the thread in place to the inside of the pot. Repeat with the second pot.
  5. Paint each of the pots red in the non-taped portion. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  6. Carefully take off the tape then paint the remaining area of each pot black. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  7. Trim about ⅛-inch of the black craft foam circles on one side, to make a flat spot, creating your ear shapes.
  8. Hot glue an ear shapes to each side of each of the painted pots, located in the black area of the pot.
  9. Hot glue each of the yellow buttons to the front of one pot, side by side, located within the red painted area of the pot.
  10. With the blunt end of the paintbrush, make polka dots using white paint on the other pot, within the red painted area. Allow this paint to dry completely.
  11. Hot glue the red ribbon bow onto the front of the polka dotted pot. Hang from the tree! photo collage tutorial of how to make mickey & minnie ornaments
