Tips to Make Jack Skellington Cupcakes

  • I always always start any chocolate cupcake I plan to make with my Lazy Girl Chocolate Cupcakes. They’re a ridiculously simple no-fail chocolate cupcake that I can rely on, no matter what. But, you do you. If you’ve got a favorite cupcake recipe in your recipe book, use that. Or if there’s a certain cake mix that just tickles your fancy, use that. These are your Jack Skellington cupcakes.
  • Try not to overfill your cupcake liners. This is normally maybe not a big deal, if you’re not making an elaborately decorated cupcake. But this time you are making elaborate decorations. So only put so much in the liner and no more.
  • Just in case you don’t have one handy, this recipe has you making your own buttercream frosting, but like with the cupcake base, if you prefer cream cheese frosting or whipped cream frosting, I am giving you permission to use that. Making these Jack cupcakes is more about the decorating than the flavor – you do you.
  • If you would rather not use fondant for the ears, you can use chocolate-dipped mini OREO cookies. They won’t look exactly like my cupcakes, but if you’re not confident with fondant, it might be one less thing you have to worry about.

Total Time 55 minutes

Ingredients

Fondant Ears

Jack's Bowtie

Buttercream Frosting

  • 2 C unsalted sweet cream butter, softened
  • 5 C powder sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 6-10 TBSP heavy whipping cream
  • Black gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. To make the fondant Mickey ears, lightly coat your rolling surface (cutting board or counter) with powdered sugar and spread the black fondant over it, lightly coating the black fondant with the powdered sugar in the process.
  2. Roll out the fondant into a 1/2 inch thick disk and with a 4-inch round cookie cutter, cut out 24 circles. You can transfer the circles to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet for ease of moving them.
  3. With the silver food coloring pen, draw 10-15 thin, rough lines onto each of the Mickey ears.
  4. Set aside the Mickey ears to dry overnight on the counter.
  5. To make the bowties, cut out 12 rough shapes (very rough, because you're going to eat them, after all) and, using the silver food coloring pen, draw the legs and two eyes on each bowtie. I was able to cut my sugar sheets with scissors. Just take care to make sure your scissors are clean and dry.
  6. To make the cupcakes, preheat your oven and follow the directions to make the batter per the directions of your favorite recipe. Fill the cupcake liners about 2/3 full.
  7. Bake per the directions of your recipe, then remove from the oven and allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
  8. To make the buttercream frosting, cream together all of the ingredients and mix on medium speed until stiff peaks form.
  9. Divide the frosting into two bowls equally.
  10. Add 5-6 drops of black gel food coloring to one bowl, stirring until the color is consistent throughout.
  11. Place the black frosting on one side of the decorating bag and white frosting on the other to create the swirled look.
  12. Add a large swirl of frosting on top of each cupcake, then place a bowtie in the center of each pile of frosting.
  13. Place one Mickey ear on either side of the bow, pressed into the frosting so that it stands up on its own, then present and enjoy!
