Tips to Make Merry & Bright Yarn Trees

  • Wind your yarn snuggly. And loads of winds. I probably had 100-150 winds. And they were so tight I almost couldn’t pull the loops off my template. But that makes for a really dense finished product, which is ah-mazing!
  • Be sure to brush out your yarn. Seriously. These little yarn Christmas trees look absurd with the yarn it’s natural thickness. Speaking of looking absurd, trim, trim, trim. You will not be disappointed–unless you don’t trim off enough of the floppy bits of yarn.
  • When selecting colors for your little yarn Christmas trees, be sure to pick two or more colors that are contrasting. Nothing says fun like a cheery Merry & Bright theme in pinks and bright greens to make for some cheer. Or red, grey and black for a farmhouse theme. Just look for contrasting colors to pull it all together.

How Do I Make this Yarn Christmas Tree?

I’m so glad you asked. Below is our written tutorial.

Drill a small hole in the center of your wood round. Set aside.

Trim your cardboard to be 3 inches on one end, 5 inches on the other, and 8 inches long. This is your template for winding.

Wrap the yarn around the cardboard template 100-150 times, in a 5-6-inch space.

Cut the end of the yarn off.

Fold the floral wire in half and slip it over the wound yarn, going in the opposite direction the yarn is wound, with the open end toward the wider part of the template.

Push the yarn (and wire) off the template.

Press the wire more snugly onto the yarn by twisting the open end of the wires together.

With the scissors, cut all of the yarn loops.

Brush the yarn out. Press the wire more snugly (again) onto the yarn by twisting the wires together some more.

Brush out the yarn some more and trim any straggler loops.

Trim the loose yarn ends off, forming a cone shape.

Hot glue the wire ends into the hole in the wood round and enjoy!
