Tips to Make Harry Potter Spell book Notebooks

  • Start by grabbing some simple composition notebooks here. You don’t want a spiral notebook or one with anything on the front to texturize it.
  • Definitely grab some fake snake/rats/bugs whatever like these and/or some faux tiny skeletons like these. You can certainly make shapes with the hot glue, but with these larger elements, it’s just easier to make them with items that already have the shape you want.
  • Something I wish I’d done is add a sheet of paper between the first page of the notebook and the cover and also the last page of the notebook and the cover, to protect the other pages.
  • Grab your hot glue gun and get ready, because that’s the bulk of how you’re going to decorate your spellbooks!

These easy Harry Potter spellbook notebooks are so simple and fun, and you can make several for the kiddo to help them in every wizarding class!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Active Time 30 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes
Difficulty Easy
Estimated Cost $3

Materials

  • 2 Composition Notebooks
  • Fake Snake/Rat/Bat/Bugs
  • Fake Tiny Skeleton
  • Mod Podge
  • Tissue Paper
  • Black Acrylic Paint
  • Gold Acrylic Paint
  • 12-14 inches of 2-inch wide Ribbon (any will do)
  • Gold Paint Pen

Tools

  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Start by spreading your notebooks open, facedown on a table. Something I wish I'd done is add a sheet of paper between the first page of the notebook and the cover and also the last page of the notebook and the cover, to protect the other pages.
  2. Put a layer of mod podge on the spine, then place a strip of ribbon on the spine, followed by another layer of mod podge.
  3. Place your fake snake or rat or bugs or skeleton bones on the front or back of the notebooks, hot gluing them in place. If you put an element across the spine of either notebook, cut it with scissors or an exacto knife to allow the spine of the book to still function.
  4. With your hot glue gun, start adding swirls and cornices over the cover, if desired. I added "rib bones" on the back of one notebook, swirls on the opposite cover and then the kiddo wanted nothing to do with swirls on the other cover. So just do what you like. Allow the hot glue to dry completely. photo collage tutorial of how to make a harry potter composition notebook
  5. Place a layer of mod podge on one cover surface, then lay a sheet of tissue paper over the top of the mod podge. With your brush, press the tissue paper into the details of the elements you put on the cover as you add another layer of mod podge. I was able to pick out a lot of detail doing this just by taking my time and working the tissue paper into the shapes. Repeat with every cover face. Don't worry about leaving bits of tissue paper hanging off the cover--just make sure to get tissue paper on every part of the surface. Allow the mod podge to dry completely. I let mine dry overnight.
  6. Paint the entire surface of each cover with the black paint. Allow the paint to dry completely. You should not need a second coat, but if you do, allow each coat to dry completely before moving on.
  7. With the gold paint, dry brush the high points of each cover, picking out the hot glue shapes and the fake elements, as well.
  8. With the gold paint pen, add "spells" to the front of the cover, if desired.
  9. Trim off the loose edges of the tissue paper around the edges of the cover and enjoy! photo collage tutorial of how to make a harry potter spellbook from a notebook
