Tips to Make This Gnome Halloween Garland

  • First, click here to get the pattern for the gnomes or click here to get the pattern for the gnomes with the cut files. Yes, you can use your cutting machine to cut both the hats and the witch’s hat band, the screw bits, so much.
  • Let me tell you about the “filler” bits of the garland. They’re just little glitter covered foam balls from the dollar store (Dollar Tree to be exact). But you can use just about anything. Different gnome garlands call for different things. I used cinnamon sticks for a reindeer gnome garland, I used little felt balls for a valentine gnome garland and now I’ve used these glittery foam balls. Just use whatever is on hand that works for your theme!
  • Take your time. The entire halloween gnome garland took me about 45 minutes from start to finish (although, to be honest, I was dawdling a bit, because the kiddo was occupied and I was just having fun). This is a bit longer than most crafts for me, so if you need a break, take it. It’s not going to hurt anything. The gnomes aren’t going anywhere. Well, the vampire gnome might flitter off, but I think you’re ok with the rest.
  • If you haven’t cut faux fur before or you’re not sure how to make it look nice, don’t worry, I’m here to help. Flip over the fur and, using a razor blade or Exacto knife, cut just the fabric backing of the fur into a wee triangle shape (make sure the pile of the fur is pointing toward the apex of your triangle so it drapes down the gnome). Pull the cut fur piece away from the whole and you’ll have a beautiful beard. If you’re a visual learner like me, I show you how to easily cut faux fur in this video.

Materials

Tools

  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Oven
  • Cricut Maker, optional

Instructions

  1. With scissors or a cutting machine, cut the pieces described in the pattern for each of the gnomes.
  2. Make 5 tiny noses from the beige polymer clay and green polymer clay.
  3. Cut 4 beard shapes from the faux fur, using the beard shape in the pattern as a guide.
  4. For the witch, cut 3 1/2-inch wide strips of the purple roving, pinch them together at the top with a binder clip and braid away!  When you have about 5 inches of braid, tie off both ends with some embroidery thread, trim the roving on each end to neaten it up, and you’re done.
  5. Cut the wings from the bat body and discard the body. If you don’t have a bat, cut wings from felt.
  6. Cut (or tear) the white rag (or cloth) into 1/2-inch wide strips (you will need 3-4 strips).
  7. Roll the screw shank pieces into a tight cylinder and hot glue the screw heads on.
  8. Paint (or use a marker) the tips of the white foam fangs red, if desired.
  9. To make the following hats, turn the hat shapes face down and make a cone by folding the two long edges of the triangle inward, then glue together. Use white for the ghost and mummy and black for the vampire.
  10. Glue the eyes and mouth for the ghost to the white ghost hat, fold the hat tip down in front, and glue in place.
  11. Glue the bat wings to the back of the vampire hat and fold the hat tip over, gluing it in place.
  12. For Frankenstein’s hat, cut the top 2-inches of the green hat off, discarding the tip. Cut off the bottom 1 inch of the black hat in a jagged mess. Tuck the green hat remnant inside the  black hat and hot glue it in place. Glue the screws on either side of the hat. Add a set of stitches in black felt, if desired.
  13. For the witch hat, make a tight cone with the black felt hat shape that is small enough to fit in the inside circle of the brim shape with about 1/2 inch of the cone sticking out of the bottom of the brim. Hot glue the hat edges together. Cut 1/2 inch slits in the hat bottom about 1/2 inch apart, creating flaps. Flip the flaps up under the brim of the hat and hot glue them in place to the brim on the bottom side. Wrap the hat band around the base of the cone, glue it in place, and add the buckle on the band in the center front of the hat.
  14. Tuck the beards inside the hat by about 1/4 - 1/2 inch and hot glue each in place.
  15. Make the witch body, glue the two sides together to make a pocket and stuff with polyfill. Glue the top closed. Glue the body to the witch hat. Tuck the braids under the hat and secure with glue.
  16. For all of the noses, set the noses in the center of the beard, just under the edge of the brim of the hat. Secure with hot glue.
  17. Add a dot of hot glue right on the top of the nose and press the hat brim down so you get a cute little wrinkle.
  18. Add the fangs tucked in the vampire beard, below the nose.
  19. Wrap the white rag strips around the mummy’s hat and top of the beard, hot gluing as you wrap. Let the nose peek through the strips.
  20. Cut a 3-4 foot length piece of embroidery thread and thread the needle. Add 5-6 glitter foam balls, then a gnome, working on the back side of the gnome’s hat.
  21. Repeat until all of the gnomes are strung on the thread and enjoy! photo collage tutorial of how to make a halloween gnome banner
