DIY Sugar Cubes

I’ve put together a 5 minute activity for DIY sugar cubes that will really “up your party” game. These days, most of the parties I attend are of the ‘tea’ variety, hosted by an adorable 3 year old. While planning a Hello Kitty tea party for the little one to accompany our letter “T” learning fun, these DIY sugar cubes certainly made an impact!

My DIY sugar cubes were a huge hit at our little soiree, and I’m sure if you have a party in mind, you can come up with a color and flavor combination that would jazz things up! I made the Hello Kitty ones and didn’t take pictures, so I whipped up a second batch using food coloring and a strawberry flavor. Just FYI, I liked them better with the strawberry juice.

While at Ouijimaya, the little one saw the Hello Kitty section and wanted to move in! Funny yes, but she was completely serious when she asked if we could move into the store so she could be close to “all the beautiful Hello Kitty things.”

I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

After spending for.ev.er in the happy land of Miss Kitty and her friends, we came home with, among other things, this awesome Hello Kitty candy mold. It’s a solid, little mold for baking and freezing, so I thought I’d try these DIY sugar cubes in it.

I only made a few and they are small, but that’s okay because we’re not too big on giving the three year old too much refined sugar. And because they last a long time – years, people – you can have them on hand for any number of occasions.

We used our sugar cubes as part of our Hello Kitty comes to Tea themed tea party, an activity to reinforce writing the letters in the word, tea. We printed off the pink and white bunting template and CD circles from here. She selected felt letters that spelled “tea” on the bunting and wrote her letters on the circles.

We hung the simple banner and put the letter practice circles under the Plexiglass on her modified IKEA Latt table – still the best $20 I’ve ever spent! You can have one too, by following our popular, quick and easy IKEA LATT table tutorial.

I set up some delicious strawberry banana bread as a snack, along with a refreshing cup of coconut water. Do your kids go crazy over plain coconut water? My kid absolutely loves it, almost as much as she loves this bread!

Ingredients for DIY Sugar Cubes

• 1/3 c granulated sugar
• 3/4 tsp filtered water or juice – I used strawberry juice from the mashed strawberries I used in this strawberry banana bread.
• flavoring and food colors, optional

*This can be doubled or tripled, depending on your mold or number of guests.

Ingredients

• 1/3 c granulated sugar

Instructions

Place the sugar into a bowl and create a crater in the center. Add water or juice, and any food coloring and/or flavoring. Stir well to incorporate and press into your mold. If you don’t have a mold, you can still use the recipe above and put it into a small glass dish or pan, and cut them into squares when they harden. Let them a few hours, or leave them overnight.
