DIY Hand Lettered Ornament - Wood Slices for the Win
Let's make a fun and custom DIY hand lettered ornament in a beautiful bouncy hand lettering style. You don't need any experience, just grab a pencil!
Materials
- Round wood slices (these are predrilled - we had to drill holes in ours)
- Pencil and fine tip permanent marker or pen
- White acrylic paint and a small paintbrush
- Decorative ribbon (we used 1/8" wide)
- Practice Template (download it here)
Instructions
- Paint the wood slices with white paint, leaving a border unpainted along the outside of each wood slice. Repeat once dry and set aside.
- Determine your writing space. Trace the outline of the wood slices and then roughly gauge the inner border (where the paint will end). Create a few to practice with.
- Practice writing the phrases inside the templates you've created.
- After ensuring each wood slice is dry, copy the phrase in pencil over to the ornament. Carefully trace over the pencil marks with your permanent marker or pen. As with all lettering, make sure the down strokes are thicker than the upstrokes.
- Let dry overnight before erasing any visible pencil marks. Note: if the marker smudges at all, stop and wait.
- Add a ribbon and hang (or gift) your DIY hand lettered ornament!

These ornaments are amazing! I love the rustic look mixed with hand lettering. Now I just need to get my hand on a bunch of wood slices :D
Aren’t they just so fun? I love that I can letter anything on them – we’re doing names for a friend of ours. Happy lettering!
